Hey everyone,

I am currently working full-time as a scribe and part time for a catering company but now that applications are complete I am trying to save up as much money as I can. I was a TA in college so I was thinking about becoming a private tutor to be able to make some extra money on the side.

I am not exactly sure how to go about this and was wondering if I could get advice from those of you who have successfully become tutors in your area! I just graduated first in my class with a Bachelor's in Science and am currently residing in the same down as my undergrad and multiple high schools, elementary schools, etc.

I am not sure the best way to advertise my services (fliers, ads..?), how much to charge, or the best way to go about any of this. Anyone who can give me some advice to get started would be much appreciated!

I advertise online, for your rate it really depends on your area and subject. If you were able to tutor high school or first year calculus that would pay a lot better than biology (rarely needed). I tutor chemistry which is probably a middle ground.

What do you use online? Craigslist?

One of my roommates is a graphic design major so I was thinking I could make up a couple fliers and put them around campus, in the town library, etc too.

And in college I TA'ed Gen Chem, Orgo, Upper level bios, physics, Calc (unofficially)

I use a Canadian site that's less sketchy. You could probably use Craiglist, you'd just be at a higher risk of someone knocking you out and stealing your blood.

Fliers around campus are definitely a good way too. If you have any connections with professors at your school let them know. I had a 1st year chem prof send students my way way when they told him they were struggling in office hours.

If you're comfortable tutoring organic that would probably be a fruitful subject, but gen chem, physics and calc would open up the deep pockets of parents of dumb high schoolers.

I've been thinking about this as well. One of my professors told me to charge at least 50$/hour, but that sounds like a lot. He said he used to tutor chem for 100$/hour

Yeah, I went to a small liberal arts school so I am close with a lot of my professors. We also have an academic center that sets up students from the community with students at our school for tutoring so maybe I will give them a call as well.

Thank you!

Jeez, that's a lot from my perspective. The area I am close to however is full of rich, prep school type kids so I am sure there are parents out there willing to spend that kind of money

I wish I had thought of that a couple years ago. I could work a few hours and make as much as I do in a week
