I am applying to U of A this year and am required to choose whether I want to go to Phoenix or stay in Tucson for the 3rd and 4th years. I was wondering if there is anyone out there who might have advice on which one to choose based on location, learning experience, etc.? Is this decision binding once I submit it on the secondary application? Thanks!

I'm at AZCOM, so can't give any advice on the didactic side (though it seems like UoA has a pretty tight lock on the hospitals around here, which has got to be a good thing.

As for location, Phoenix is spectacular. Really everything you could want. Tempe's got the perfect college town vibe, Glendale's a sports mecca, Scottsdale has LA-caliber upscale clubs, and though I haven't looked into it, I'm sure the bingo and shuffleboard scene is pretty quality too. Great indie music scene, good jazz from what I'm told, and of course there's baseball nearly year-round with the Fall League and spring training.

In Phoenix, you're also a lot closer to the northern parts of the state (obviously). It's definitely a big jump over Tuscon, though, since you can head to Sedona or Flagstaff for a day for gorgeous scenery and cool temperatures, while it would be a stretch to do that from Tuscon.

Good luck with school either way, and have fun! Tuscon's beautiful too, so I'm sure you can't go wrong.

i'm at UA med and i'm from phoenix, did my undergrad at UA so i have input on each. i'm a first year and when i applied we did not have to choose either phoenix or tucson...so i'm not familiar with this as it must be new for the class of 2008. i would call the admissions office and ask them about if it's binding...if it isn't, then no problem just choose one you think you'd like and take into consideration all the other things you're supposed to consider when applying to med school, i.e. finances, family, Significant other, etc. and remember you'd hopefully be able to change your mind if it isn't binding. i don't know what to tell you if it is binding...i would ask to talk to linda in the admissions office if it is binding to get more info about each of the training sites and then take into consideration the above i mentioned. i can't say for certain, but i would assume you'd about the same in terms of clinical ed at either place since they set it up this way. i don't think they would have started the phoenix campus if it weren't on the level of the tucson campus, because then obviously people who trained in phoenix wouldn't be as competent as those who trained in tucson. i don't know if any of this is making sense, but i hope it does. i just finished a week of midterms and i'm sleep deprived so i'm going to bed now and will check back here on sunday when i wake up. in the meantime IM if you would like further info and maybe i can help. best of luck in applying.

YES, ALL DONE AND A WEEK OFF TO DO A WHOLE LOTTA NOTHIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They are making you choose NOW! That is so crazy. Thank goodness they didn't make us do that because my life is so up in the air and my choice will completely depend on where my sig. other is employed which I won't know until the end of this year.

I'm with lattimer....find out whether it is binding. Also, I wonder if that will effect their decision process. Maybe they just had problems in the past with not having enough placements where everyone wanted to be. Weird.
