Quick question for UTSW MS1+: when do you receive your first financial aid check for the fall semester? How does the financial aid distribution work (how many checks, about what time, etc.). I tried asking finaid a few days ago but haven't received a response. Thanks so much!

I don't remember exactly when I got my first check in the fall of MS1 year, but I believe it was a couple of weeks before we started (early August). I got two checks per year, one in the fall (July-Aug) and one in the spring (January), each for half of the total FA I borrowed. I used the direct deposit option, which was awesome. The old finaid office at UTSW can be a little slow on the uptake....it's pretty busy right now because they are all working on y'alls stuff and our MS4 loan consolidation/exit interview materials. Hope this helps some!

Thanks 🙂 Much appreciated!

So maybe this is a not-really-important question, but I like to find neurotic things to stress me out in advance, apparently.

I'm wondering about computer options - specifically, whether it is best to buy through the Southwestern financial aid package (if I do this, I can't have it shipped to my homestate, which means it would be much harder to transfer applications and stuff), whether I should buy an Apple/Dell or shop around, and what kind of configuration I actually need. I can't imagine I would be using a computer for much more than web access, email, light word processing, etc. Does Southwestern have any special or odd programs that we need to be able to run?

Also - $3200 is clearly too much for a laptop, but what is a logical price ranger? I would like to get a deal, but I don't want a tin can that will break in 6 months either.

Advice is helpful =). Thank you much.

In all honesty you don't even need to buy a computer. Each lab carrel has computers to use, as well as the library. If you get one, don't get it through UTSW, it's a bad deal. There is no special software that you would need to run. You just need internet access and email, and ability to look at histology/path slides via the schools intranet or by cd-rom. I recommend buying a computer if you don't already have one, since they lend you extra money for it, but it's not as necessary as they make it seem. Good luck!

Does anyone know when we are supposed to pick our lenders on the loan by web site? I am so confused by the financial aid process.

Okay I answered my own question. I talked to Financial Aid and they said they haven't sent our info there yet and an email will be sent when you can log on to the loans by web site
