Before I ask my question, I want to say thanks to logistical and griffin for giving me such good feedback in my other thread...Anyway, I am sort of late in deciding to apply to dental school, I am already a junior in college. However, Ive taken all the premed/predental classes. I have a 3.9 science and overall gpa. My major is english and that gpa is 4.0. COnsidering I do well on the DATS, what else should I do to have a good shot at ucsf? I plan on working with an oral surgeon this summer, so I wont apply till the end of the summer when I have experience. SO first, will I have a shot at ucsf with all this if Im an out-of-stater? If not, what can I do to increase my chances. WIll applying at the end of the summer hurt my chances significiantly? I have personal reasons for wanting to there, but it will be my first choice...Id appreciate it if anyone who got into ucsf as an out of stater could reply...thanks guys

so you will be a senior next fall? if so you will be applying right on time if you do it this summer and interview next fall...in reference to your out of state question i can't speak of ucsf specifically, but i can tell you that you've got a great shot at getting into out of state schools. Don't be discouraged by people saying its impossible to get into schools out of state. Sure it might be slightly more difficult, but if you apply early (this june for matriculation in the fall of 2004) you will have a great shot at any school; especially getting at least an interview. Then it'll just be up to you to relay to them your reasons for wanting to go there...i got into all seven schools i applied to, the out of state public institutions included Florida, Maryland, Temple, and MUSC...private included USC, Tufts, and Columbia. If you can get your DATs above 20 you can almost guarantee a great shot at most schools. Gluck

I agree with MDQ, if you have DAT above 20 (especially in your science), you'll get a good shot at UCSF. A very good one. Don't be discouraged being an out of state resident. I've seen ppl from out of state getting accepted.

Beside good grades and good DAT scores, you should also have dental experience, and community service (do lots of these). And have a good reason why you want to be a dentist. (It's the first question on their secondary). You should spend a long time in writing answers for the secondary. (i'm sure your english skill will come in handy here).

Good luck, if you have any more questions, feel free to pm me.
