Hi. I am new, and not a pharmacist(or pre-). I have an RN degree, a weird health issue, and a need to find answers!

My question is, would the blue dye in Xanax 1 mg. be a contributor to me having a blue ring around my toilet bowl after urine sits for at least 12 hours? The reason I ask is there are medical issues that could cause this and I am a very proactive patient. Before I mention the "blue urine" ring to my doctor, I would like the opinion of pharmacists on what the likelihood of my blue Xanax being the culprit. The other possible causes of "blue urine", that is, regarding tryptophan metabolites producing indoles, really could be a possibility, but don't want him to just pass it off as taking a blue-dyed med if that might not be the cause.

Thanks!

The real question is why urine is sitting in your toliet bowl for 12 hrs?

😕Okay, I was hoping for a nicer answer or thoughtful response....I use the toilet in one bathroom after my family is sleeping, so don't flush so that I don't make noise. I don't get back to that bathroom until midmorning. That's why it sits.

OK not a Pharmacist, not an RN, not a MD, but if it were me.....and I wanted to try to figure more details out on my own before talking to the MD about it:

I'd pee in a clean cup, put it somewhere where no one could disturb it, and let it sit and see what happens/precipitates out. I'd want to remove the toilet water variable (and I am sorry but its really hard to type "toilet water variable" with a straight face).

Is there generic Xanax in any other color you could do a trial switch to?

It sounds like you have children? Maybe they're waking up in the middle of the night and stirring your stale urine with a blueberry otter pop. I suggest including it on your differential.

Sideways--:laugh:My last child just left for college. Besides habit after so many years of not flushing because of noise for children, I still don't flush because of my husband sleeping. Maybe that's why I am noticing the blue ring, as my daughter would use that bathroom first in the morning and flushed it first. That's probably why I never noticed it before.

Adma826--the experiment is now in progress. 'When I first noticed the bluish tint, I put a cup of urine out in the sun before for an afternoon, as I was wondering about porphyria, but it didn't turn purple on exposure to sunlight(thanks goodness I live in the country!). Obviously, I didn't let the urine sit for at least 12 hours, so didn't see a difference. 'As far as the Xanax, I have thought I might ask for the 0.5 mg. strength(as long as there is no blue dye).

Thanks!

No, I don't drink any tonic water, just tea and lots of plain water. I do have fluorescent lighting in that bathroom.
