Hello Sdn,

I am an incoming ms1 and was wondering how important my appearance is for the class photo. I heard it carries with me throughout med school. Will program directors be seeing this photo for tthe match and will thus picture that may not be as presentable i.e. a bad hair cut, disable me in anyway?

Thank you in advance!

You mean the photo for your ID badge? You might want to look a little professional - some hospitals won't provide a separate ID badge and will want you wear your student ID when seeing patients.

For residency applications you can submit whatever photo you want. When it comes time for that, I suggest clean shaven (or well trimmed facial hair), conservative haircut, and a suit.

You submit a separate picture with your residency application.

Most people wore suits that day at my school. You might look dumb if everyone is dressed up and you look like a bum.

If you're talking about the big group picture, at my school once it was printed, it got framed and hung on a wall with the other 3 classes' pictures for everyone walking into the med school to see. So in that sense, it'll follow you in that it'll be there for everyone to see for at least 4 years, so it can't hurt to look nice.

sometimes in rotations they'll put together a list of you with photos to help instructors/clinical staff know who you are, so it can be a first impression of you all year long.

You'll never be remiss in an oxford shirt, dress slacks, and professional shoes. Even in those moments it's not enough, it won't be *unprofessional,* and it's rarely *too* much. That's my go-to doctor outfit when I otherwise would have no clue.

Your hair should always be clean and your facial hair trimmed anyway.

LOL Make up. For class pics if you put on hooker make up with a trowel it will be just enough to look good for the photo.
