A family member of mine has recently discovered a lump on the top of her head. It is red and painful to the touch. She is going to see her doctor tommorow. I wish I could provide more information on the appearance of this lump, but based on the little info I described, could you provide any ideas? I was thinking maybe skin cancer.

Please do not think that I am using this as a way to obtain a dx, I just want to know what some of you think based on this small amount of info.

Common things being common, it's a pimple or a follicular cyst. Skin cancers generally don't look like that. Could also be an alien head-burster from LV-426. I recommend keeping a flame thrower handy at all times until it resolves.

If there were 100 possibilities, the last one would be skin cancer. It's possibly a bacterial infection as Mumpu said. What can be suggested is tell her not to touch the painful area. Never ever try hot packages while cold ones may decrease the pain.

I was thinking skin cancer ONLY because of her insatiable need to be in the sun all the time. Plus, it is very similar looking to the "lump" a friend of the family had that was diagnosed as cancer that spread to the rest of her body resulting in her death.

thanks for the advice!

I agreed with the above about being an infection, but get a MD take a look at it. And tell your family member not to touch the area.

Dont rule out fungal infection too. How quick did this lump appear? Is it painful? Are you seeing a dermatologist? I'm sure it wont be a big deal. But let us know the dx. I'm curious. 🙂

dunno, it's just another tinea, those tend to be flat to slightly raised. And I know mine is more dandruff and itchy with Suborrheic dermatitis, perhaps M wasn't the bugs name, but the disease related to a bug, like Mycetoma?

In big scary letters...
