Hi all,
I am planning to do a home EM month and two aways next year. My school will only allow 8 weeks total of any one subspecialty, so I would be doing 12 weeks of work for only 8 weeks of credit (so I'll be giving up a month of potential vacation time, essentially).

But, I learned today that because one away to which I've applied is under the surgery department, they would be willing to allocate those credits as surgery credits (and I would get the month of vacation time back), with the caveat that it will show up on my transcript as a surgery rotation. Would this be a problem with residency applications? My transcript will show a month of EM in August at my school, then a month of surgery out of state, and then another month of EM out of state in October. I would still be able to get a SLOR there and get more experience, so am I missing any potential downsides? What about the program where I'll be rotating? Will they think that I came there to do surgery but not EM if they're just seeing my paper app?

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

I doubt it will be a problem, the SLOR is what matters, not necessarily what department your away is in. You'll also be discussing your away during the interviews, so it's a non-issue.
