i just had a chemistry lab today and we used 6 M of ammonium hydroxide. Little did i know that solution is extremely harmful, but the professors or the person in charge did not warn us. I took a good sniff out of curiosity and this sharp, horrible smell made my nose numb for a split second. Then I sniffed it again by accident. I heard there will be side effects later on while i was surfing online (respiratory problems, blah blah blah). I didn't lose consciousness and didn't feel dizzy or whatever. Anyone had this experience? i'm thinking of going to the doctor, but i dunno.

Hmmm...I think you'll be ok. I think those side effects are for long term sniffers. :meanie: If it really worries you, I think you can just ask the pharmacist, no need for doctor cus going to the doctor will take too long (appointments). 😉 But I really think you're gonna be ok. Besides....if it was that deadly, I don't think they'll let students handle that stuff.

Jeez! Why would you sniff anything in chemistry class? Let alone something labeled at a concentration of 6M! Didn't it have warnings on the bottle? Oye..

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I've sniffed something before too in my chem lab. I don't remember what, but it made my nose feel numb too. And well, I'm still alive and smelling fine. 😀

You've taken how many courses in chemistry and never learned to waft when you inhale something?

When you're trying something that you've never tried before, the trick is to start with very small amounts, and then test larger and larger concentrations. Its a good way to avoid toxicity, and wafting is one great way of doing so. This is also something you may learn in a pharmacy history course if you've taken such.

umm...let me be specific. I did not grab a bottle of ammonium hydroxide, opened the cap and sniffed the solution. I had to add several drops of ammonium hydroxide to the filtrate; then I took a quick sniff (don't ask me why) at the filtrate and then i felt something on my nose. The second time was accidental.

Alright, from now on, i only want answers of what to do after that situation from experts or anyone w/ experiences, not insults or your opinion, although yes, i made a stupid decision; i might be 18 and a high school graduate, but i happened to make that dumb mistake.

If you did that in my lab, you would have been kicked out and received a zero for that day. Don't worry, you didn't mess up your nose. You might have singed off a few hairs.

Your here, your posting, your fine. 🙂

In one of my dumber moments I sniffed a bottle of nail polish remover at Walmart because the bottle said it was bubblegum scented. Not just a waft but a big huff before I stopped to think about it. Weoooow. The room did spin for a minute after that one.

Im fine now. 😀

Don't worry. I accidentally did the same thing, also with conc. ammonium hydroxide. Burned like hell and got blurry vision for a minute, but it passed quickly. That was two years ago and I'm still here.

You are very lucky...but didnt you learn from High School about "wafting" not sniffing odors in the lab??? The professor or whoever cant really be blamed for that especially since its a college-level course. I can understand if youre in H.S. but you should know better by now. Youre telling me that you had to surf the net to find the effects of ammonium Hydroxide??? wheres your textbook, or your lab manual for that matter??? 😕 take this as a lesson learned. also what about the pre-lab, did the prof. just let you in the lab and say "O.K guys, heres some chemicals...have fun!!" he had to have mentioned the precautions in the pre-lab. I dont get this. And to sniff it AGAIN!! whats that about?? Im sorry if im being a little abrasive (I dont mean to).

read the second post that i wrote on this thread. i sniffed it again by accident the second time. it just happened; i just sniffed a dangerous chemical and i don't know why, so keep your own opinions to yourself; the lab manual did not mention any cautions, neither did the professors, but i should know better that any chemical with ammonium in it is lethal. so there.

Guys guys guys! Calm down. You didn't qualify for a Darwin Award on this one, so take it for what it's worth and just move on.

I daresay everyone on here has done something of this caliber at some point in their lives, myself included.

We're all smart folks here; some of us just have occasional lapses in judgment. 🙄

 I laughed out loud on that one 😛

Take it easy guy!! i didnt mean any offense. Im a school teacher so I hear B.S. "excuses" for doing "questionable" things like that on a daily basis. Besides, what I stated wasnt an "opinion."...common sense, proper lab procedure...shall I go on??? I find it extremely hard to believe...(i'll stop short of questioning your honesty) that the lab manual, professor etc...didnt mention what ammonium hydroxide does. It really doesnt matter to me what you do to yourself...so dont get snippy w/ me! Im not the one sniffing dangerous chemicals and getting offended when people ask "why???"
