How much, generally, should someone trying to get into ophthalmology make during internship and residency? Also, how hard is it to become a resident? what are the hours like? How long does it take to speacialize in retina? Thanks for any help 😀

make approximately 35-45k per year.

it's one of the more competitive fields, and generally attracts very strong applicants.

hours depend on the program. in general, not as hard as a g.surg residency.

retina depends if you're doing a surgical retina fellowship (2 year fellowship), or a medical retina fellowship (1 year).

best of luck

Thanks for the help. How hard is it to get into? Is it something I should plan on? I get good grades now, I know that isn't necessarily comparable but I have a 3.9 GPA. Or is it usally the perfect med students that get it? Thanks again for any help.

Where are you from? Have you taken the USMLE?

I'm in harrisonburg Virginia, I'm still a undergraduate.

Spoon,
It's too soon to be worrying about this. Most likely, you will change your mind about what you want to go into at least twice once you get into med school. If you really want a good starting point, pick up Iserson's Guide to Getting into a Residency - it will give you some good info about all of your residency options.
