I am involved in a sort of theater club at my school.. every year we do (among other things) a Rocky Horror performance the day before Halloween , which I have participated in every year.

I'm 99% sure putting Rocky Horror on my app would be a bad choice, but still..

thoughts? 🙄

I do not think it would be a bad idea. The whole reason for asking about extracurricular activities is to see what else you do with yourself other than going to class and studying. This allows committees to see that you can do a variety of things and still maintain decent grades

an EC is an EC.

Put it down.

Its not just about having dental related ECs... schools also want to see that there is a real person underneath all of those stellar stats!

even something so risqué?

What's so risque about it? I think it's interesting and unique. The fact that you do it every year shows your commitment to your comrades and you're entertaining others in the spirit of Halloween. That's a good thing.

I personally left off a few EC because they may be controversial. As it was stated to me from others who have gone through the process, if you feel it may hurt you, leave it off.

For example being 28 i have been home-brewing beer and growing my own hops for 6 years. Many adcoms may find this interesting, however schools like Loma Linda forbid drinking... so while it is part of who i am i figured it would be best to leave it off, not knowing what background those reviewing my application will have. Even though i did not apply to Loma Linda.

Though personally i feel the theater group is a great EC, just don't mention your work with the RHPS in your application if it concerns you. If it comes up at an interview talk about other shows or the RHPS after you get a feel for how the interview is going.

+1

Agreed. With the the flurry of numbers and gpa's, DAT scores, Joe Schmoe's doing 1312312938120 hours of working in a dentist office, wouldn't it be cool to come across the adcom desk as "the Rocky Horror guy?" I'd say youre alot more likely to stand out!

It is true adcoms look at your ECs to see what else you do with yourself, but participating in something during Halloween may reflect what you do at that time and not during other parts of the year. I personally wouldn't put it on there unless I prepared year-round for this one show; if not, it would just look like an app filler.

If you have any reservations, just put down "theater club" and give a generic description. Instead of Rocky Horror, maybe put yearly musical or something. They can't fault you for that.
