Questions about after clinical phd interviews

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi,
How long ago did you interview? I heard about my offer from one program within a few days of the interview, but another program took a week to let me know I had been wait-listed. If it's been more than a week and you haven't heard anything at all then I would call or email. But if they specified a certain date/time period (such as a week), then I'd wait until that time period passes.

Hope this helps!

I am not sure if I would call or not unless it has been awhile. Truthfully, I can't remember how long it was before I got my offer (it was so long ago now).

If they want you, they will let you know for sure. I'd be careful about following-up too soon (e.g., maybe wait 2 weeks).

I'd say it is definitely a different story if you have another offer. Then definitely follow-up because you could speed them up.

Too late for this interview, but when you are interviewing it is okay to ask about their decision-making timeline.

Agree with Pragma that having another offer in hand makes a difference. If you can call and say, "I have an offer from U of X, but I will tell them that I am not interested if I get an offer from you. When will decisions be made?" that is totally understandable. Otherwise you seem impatient. Without another offer it doesn't really change anything if they tell you this week or next week (although it makes you miserable waiting.)

In general, it can vary a lot school to school and even lab to lab Sometimes they will be waiting to issue offers until they interview someone that is not interviewing with the rest of the group. They are coordinating a lot of information, interviewees, and members of the selection committee, so these things always take longer than they probably should.

Good luck during this stressful time!

It can take up to 3-4 weeks, in my experience. I wouldn't contact them at all until you've heard, UNLESS it's been over 4 weeks, you have another offer, and they are your top choice. If you are accepted or on the waitlist, trust me, they will let you know!!

Last year I got waitlisted after interviewing and it took about two weeks to hear back...I was told my position on the waitlist also, which is nice to know! Best of luck! 🙂

I applied in 2007 and received two invitations to interview. Within a week of interviewing at both schools I was notified that i was on the wait list at both schools. School #1 told me I was high on the list but did not disclose a rank. School #2 said I was first on the list. Early March I was told I was no longer under consideration at school #1. School #2 notified me near the end of March that they had accepted me into their program. Good luck !

I interviewed with UNT on 2-1-13 and was notified on 2-7-13 of my acceptance into their counseling psych program. I'm not sure this is the norm though. I have two more interviews (one this week, one next) and I plan on asking them when they think they'll make their decisions since UNT is waiting on my answer.

I'd second others' advice...first, ask at the interviews when they anticipate notifying applicants of their status. Some sites have multiple interview weeks or faculty panels that take a while to convene. Some POIs will be quicker about making offers than others. Some schools will have their initial invites ready in a few days.

If you don't have any idea what a school's timeline is, I'd give them 3-4 weeks before contacting them about your status. If you see on the forums that other students have heard about their status, then it might be okay to contact the program to check on your status. The caveat to all of this is if you have another offer but you're waiting on it to find out about another program. I would still give the school 2 weeks to get back to you, but you do want to let them know after that if you are holding out for their offer.

Good luck to everyone going through this insane process this year!
