Hi. I'm new to this site. My name is Mandy and I am 17 years old. I am going to be a senior this year and I am very nervous about the future. It's hard choosing one career path to go down. It's a major life decision basically. One career that sticks out to me is dermatology. However, I am completely clueless when it comes to this.I really would appreciate your information! There's no guidance counselors at my school, and me being clueless is making me a nervous wreck. I really am interested in skincare. That's the only thing I'd see myself being interested in. Please give me all of the advice you're willing to offer. I know I may sound annoying because of how clueless I am, but i really would be so thankful if someone explained everything that I needed to know to me.Thank you

Some questions I could think of:
1.) What are the HIGH SCHOOL recquirements in order to get into the dermatology field?
2.) How many years of studying is it? Is there anyway to make the years of study shorter...like going all year round? or doing something else? If so, what would that shorten the years down to?
3.) Is it difficult (the study)?
4.) Is there any dermatology career that recquires less years but still gets alot of good money?
5.) What is the schedule like? (work hours)

You need to go to college first, get a degree, take the pre reqs which is about two years of courses, take the MCAT, apply to medical school which takes 4 years then apply to a derm residency. It's a long path and derm is highly competive just focus on getting into college and getting the highest grades you can once you are there

You could also go to college and then apply to PA school and go to derm that way as well which would be shorter but definitely less pay. Don't worry about requirements in high school just get to college

What about beauty school?

But I'll play nice for now:
1) From high school, you need to get into college. From college, you need to get into medical school. In medical school, then it's time to start worrying about your future specialty. The only high school requirements are the ones required to get into college.
2) 4 (high school) + 4 (college) + 4 (medical school) + 4 (internship + residency).
3) It depends, some will find it difficult, some find it manageable, for most it will require hard work.
4) You get out of life what you put into it. If we knew of a career that allowed us to put in less time for more money, I assure you we would all be doing it. While everyone can understand and embrace such motivations, that is something I would encourage you to keep private and out of personal statements / interviews.
5) This will vary from physician to physician. While too early to think of a medical specialty, it would not hurt to ask around and shadow some local dermatologists to see what their day to day practice entails.
