Just had a few questions for you guys about my application. As of right now my GPA is about a 3.7, sGPA about a 3.6. No clue what my MCAT score will be, but I don't think that's necessarily relevant right now.
These are my ECs as of right now…
Student Tutor for Cell / Molecular Biology at small liberal arts college - 1 semester
Work Study Student at a Medical School - 3 semesters
Research Assistant at hospital (All I really did was data entry, sample collection packet assembly, and occasionally some proofreading for publications in progress… because the doctor was foreign and needed input with grammar) - 1 semester
Hospital emergency room volunteer - 3 months, 4 hours per week (~48 hours so far)
I have also worked a few part time jobs, in retail and other non-medical fields.
There are a few "unique" things on my application, sports I compete in, and other miscellaneous things as well.
This upcoming summer I plan on volunteering, or getting involved in research, or shadowing a doctor. I am a junior now, and I don't plan on taking my MCAT / applying to medical school until after I graduate, or as I am finishing up my last semester as a senior. What do you guys recommend that I do to help my chances as an applicant? I know that these are just cookie cutter ECs, but I want to make sure I am not blatantly missing any of these "unspoken requirements" in my application.
While I'm posting here, the major downside to my application is that I transferred schools twice. I completed four semesters at a small liberal arts college, transferred to a larger, much more "prestigious" university. I was only there for one semester though, because of some financial hardships at home, I wasn't able to afford to stay there without taking absurd amounts of loans. So I transferred to a public university that isn't the greatest, but I had to do what I had to do. So I will be finishing up my bachelors at my third school. I will explain in a future interview that I only intended on transferring once, and I loved the school, but I just couldn't afford to stay and was left with no choice but to transfer. Do you think that will be seen as a legitimate reason for attending three separate colleges?
Last thing, have any of you guys taken your MCAT and started the application process after graduating? If so, what is the realistic time span between graduation and starting medical school. I was figuring it would be about a one year process? I'm not necessarily in any rush, my main focus is keeping my GPA up in school, and then scoring as high as I can on the MCAT. I don't want to overlap the two and have them be detrimental to each other.
Thanks for any input!
