Questions about MSW to PsyD/PhD

I am not sure why the original post got deleted. But I am wondering the same question. I am currently in my first year with a MSW program and going towards a clinical concentration. I am pretty much set on re-applying to Ph.D programs (Counseling, Clinical) and 1 Psy.D program.

As for some advice, I have contacted several schools inquiring about previous applicants and students that have been admitted with a MSW. Of the schools that I heard back from, I heard mostly positive remarks with one of the down sides being that some MSW courses may not transfer over into the Ph.D program- thus you'll need to re take them.

I also heard that it is important to make the case as to why you are going from social work to psychology- this could be something to write in a personal statement or especially in the interview

This is true! I went from an MSW to a PhD program, and, indeed, virtually none of your courses can be put toward your PhD. You can, however, report prior practicum hours (internship hours). They do not count toward your PhD requirements per se, but can be added to the total you get. This makes you a more attractive candidate when applying for doctoral internships, residencies, or postdocs.

Yes, this will be very, VERY important. With a LCSW you can practice psychotherapy as competently as PhD. The salary difference and consumer preference is not different either. A search for jobs for a PhD psychologists might return results like "Qualifications: LCSW +x years of experience or PhD." The case is very difficult to make. I won't give you my answer, but if reflect DEEPLY on why you want the PhD despite having an MSW.... you will find your answer.
