I am currently applying for the 2012 Formal Postbac program at SFSU starting in June. I was wondering if anyone could give me any feedback on the program if they were in it or if anyone has experience with SF State. Also, out of curiosity, what's the benefit of doing a Post-Bac program and paying so much more rather than applying to get a second bachlors and going to get your B.S. in Biology. I ask because I would save a ton of money by just applying as an undergrad rather than paying the far higher tuition for the postbac program. Thank you in advance.

Look at the requirements for a 2nd bachelors - it's likely 2 years of work, with mandatory projects & classes beyond the med school prereqs. Which is fine, but I doubt 2 years are cheaper than one.

Depending on the school, you may have more trouble getting admitted to do a 2nd bachelors, and if that costs you financial aid and/or registration priority, then you lose the bet.

If, however, your GPA is low, the 2nd bachelors is much better, because it gives you more coursework with which to raise your GPA...assuming you can get A's in the hardest classes you've yet seen.

Bio isn't the only option. Any major that includes the prereqs is fine (biochem, micro, neuro etc). If you're at a school that isn't going to restrict the classes you take, you could major in piano or Mandarin or whatever you like, and get the prereqs done as electives.

Best of luck to you.
