I was reading up on the optometry program at Waterloo and I noticed that in the final year, an oral exam is required to complete the program. Can anyone give details on the oral exam? Has anyone on this forum been through the exam? Do ALL optometry schools have the oral exam? They sound stressful.

They got rid of the oral examination last year. So no worries at Waterloo anymore!

Oh my god! That is such a relief! Thank you!

I just hope that the University does not bring it back when I am in the optometry program at the University of Waterloo(which will be around 4-5 years).

What's bad about the oral exam? What do you do?

It is an approximately 2 hour oral presentation that is absolutely required to get the optometry doctoral degree. It is in the fourth year of the optometry program. It is considered a degree milestone. You don't pass the oral exam, you don't get the degree.

Ooooh i see. Yea that sounds pretty brutal.
Stupid waterloo!! I go to undergrad. there so i can say that 😛

You know, check for cavities, gum disease, signs of pathology, the usual stuff. It's not so bad, but it grosses some people out when they do one for the first time. 😉

See Optometry really does want to do encroach on other professions!
