Hello!
So I just got my very first medical school interview at Touro-MI and I'm very excited! Believe me, I honestly had given up hope and was looking into re-applying at another time. I was browsing through the SDN interview feedback about Touro and noticed alot of students who seemed to be discouraged from attending this school. I was wondering if anyone has any feedback about what life is like as a Touro student? Also, I'm very concerned about safety on campus. I've been reading posts about how unsafe Mare Island is and this makes me worried. I was wondering if any TUCOM students really feel unsafe living on campus? Thanks I appreciate any input!

I think a lot of people are turned off by the construction and general appearance of the campus. I was disappointed when I drove to the school the day before my interview. After the interview and tour, however, I had a different opinion about the school.

These are the positive aspects about the school:
  • Located near San Francisco
  • Impressive Match List
  • Good Academics
  • Students looked happy to be there and the school seems very selective of who it enrolls

These are the negative aspects about the school:
  • While the school is near SF, Vallejo is pretty bad looking (Benecia looks like a great place to live though)
  • Lots of construction - the buildings look old on the outside, but the insides are rebuilt - other than that there is a lot of construction going on to develop the island now that the Navy is gone. You'll see what I mean when you drive to campus.
  • The school is not really unsafe, in my opinion, but I could see how it could be a little creepy at night because the island looks abandoned.
  • This could very well be a positive, but the curriculum may be changing for next year and right now they follow a block exam schedule... basically I've heard of students having 10 exams a week! But, I guess if you keep up and put in the work this should be doable. This is something to consider though if you plan on going here.

If you can look past these negatives, I think it's an excellent school. After thinking about it I put in my deposit and couldn't be happier.

These positives sound pretty hefty to me. Although I opted not to attend TUCOM-MI (chose NV instead), I was quite impressed with the school, and student body as well. Location surrouding the campus seemed little sketchy, but being on campus dispelled my security concerns. Congrats on the interview, good luck.

You know, for every person that can't get past a school being under construction and bettering itself every day there are 5 who would sell their souls for an interview, much less an acceptance there.

The match list IS impressive. It's on the website.

The drive, yes is every bit as ugly as people make it seem. But remember, you're going to be attending class on campus, not on the drive up to campus. The campus is actually quite nice. Big library with lots of study nooks and big comfy chairs, nice cafe on campus, an anatomy lab that rivals any school, allopathic or osteopathic, and they have block scheduling, which I think I'll like a lot. Four weeks of class and one week of exams. better than exams every week, IMHO.

I too was apprehensive ten minutes before the interview started, but during and after I had made it my first choice.

Good luck at your interview!
