given that the classes are based on the h/hp/p/f scale, do you know if they are curved or if the grades are based on straight %'s?
It depends on the class but this is the general rule. Before the class starts they will say any one who gets a >90% gets honors and >87% gets high pass. These are guareented so even if half the class gets >90% they all will get honors. But I have also found that it is fairly common for the proffesor to lower the % to get honors/high pass because not enogh of the class got a high enough score, so in a way it is curved. At first I did not like the system because usually 75% of the class got pass which I thought was to big a % but then I completely changed my mind when finals came for anatomy and histo. You will find that no matter where you go there will never be enough time to study for finals. So the grading system takes a little pressure off which usually allows me to try and focus on one class to try and honor or high pass.

how difficult is it to make a transition if you're coming from CA? also how hard is it if you don't have a car on-campus?
The transistion from CA is not hard (30% of the class is from CA) you will find that you really do not have much time in medical school so the area you live in becomes less important than it was for undergrad. This is not to say there is nothing to do here because we can get to the city in a half hour. When it comes to the issue of a car you definately need one to go grocery shopping etc but you do not have to have one yourself. The reason for this is that around 75% of the class has a car so it is usually very easy to find someone who is going shopping. I have some friends with no car and so far they have not had any difficulties.

what is the best thing about the school? The worst thing?
There are allot of nice things that I like about the school so I am just going to list them as the come to me. The dorms are awesome, they just finished the new building this year which has new classrooms, lecture hall, anatomy lab (it is beatiful lab that is bright and has excellent ventilation, you will see why this is important). The school has a medical school plus a public health school, a PT program and a PHd program for basic sciences. The nice part about it is that even though the other class are there the administration seems to revolve around the medical school which is kind of nice. I also like the fact that we get allot of patient contact the first year because so far we have been going to a primary care office and now we are interviewing psych patients. Also I like most of the profs and they have been very helpful if we need the help. The worst thing could also be the best thing depending on your perspective. The school is located in the suburbs so you have to drive a few miles to get to reastrants and other things. Personally I do not mind it because it is a very nice area but some people wish we were closer to things.

How is the student rapport? Chill or competetive
I would say that the class gets allong very well and everybody is very helpful and nice to each other. And generally it is pretty chill here and just like everywhere there will be gunners but they tend to keep it hidden inside because it would not go over well with the rest of the class.

How often do you actually get into NYC
It depends greatly on the person. Some people go all the time others almost never. It is easy to get into the city and doesn't take very long. Also some of the class is interviewing psych patients in the city (first years) so they go in every week.

So if you haven't noticed yet I am very happy with the school and glad that I came here. Also I think this is true with the class as a whole. I have not heard anyone saying they do not like it here or that they wished they went somewhere else. I hope I answered everyone's questions who PM me I combined questions that I felt were similar. But feel free to ask some more questions.

Hi Med Student-my nymc expert. Do you have an idea about how many ppl come off the WL each year? I just heard from a friend that she knew two ppl who got pulled off 2 weeks before classes started. Is this common?

Sorry if this info is elsewhere.
thanks

It is hard to give you an accurate number but we have one of the largest classes in the country and I know allot of people do come of the waitlist. So I know it sucks but have patience because people really start to come off the waitlist after the deadline to send in deposits to hold a spot (this gets people to give up acceptances to schools they are not that interested in going to) which I think is coming up right around now.

thanks for your help med student. NYMC is my top choice, though if Cinci accepts me, I should go there bc of the large $$ difference. That must be one of the down sides of NYMC wouldn't you say (~50K/yr)? However, I currently live in NYC and would love to go to NYMC.

Brentwood Boy,

yes, NYMC is still interviewing. I talked to my student host a couple nights ago & she said an interviewee would be staying with her later this week.

Yup they are still interviewing but I think it is very close to being over because I got an email from an interviewee who said he was interviewing on the last day of interviews. I do not remember the exact date but I think it ws in the next two weeks. Also I agree it is expensive I forgot to add that to my original comments.

Also, are they done sending invites?

Okay I got some more answers to the questions I got on PM.

First there are buses that go through the campus and I see people waiting for them frequently so I assume they work but I have not been on one. Also when it comes to going into the city you have two choices depending on where you are going (ie how bad the parking is going to be). You can either drive in and get there in about 25 min or you can take the train and it takes about 40 min (the train station is near by) to get into the city. Both work well and I have done both it just depends on where you are going in the city how, what time of the day it is and how many people are going etc.

For your second question about them still sending out invites my feeling at first was that they are probobly not sending out any more invites but in the process of looking for the email I found an email from another interviewer who had a interview this week that he got because someone cancelled. So the point is that it is becoming a long shot to get an interview but you never know.

med student,

What's the curriculum like first year? I'm probably attending in August and I'm afraid to say I don't have a clue. I know what classes have to be taken, but I don't know how they are structured time-wise: How many classes are taken at the same time, which ones are consecutive, does anatomy run the entire year, etc. How many hours per day? Is there a class schedule on-line on the web site (I couldn't find one)? Can you give me an idea?

Also, what percentage of your class actually goes to lectures. Are people taking advantage of the scribe service instead?

Thanx.

Thanx.•••••Okay here is the deal. You take anatomy and histo first and this lasts until thanksgiving. Then you start taking biochem and physio until spring break and then you take psych and neuroanotomy. The schedules vary depending on the class. For anatomy and histo you will have lectures in the morning from 9-12 and then in the afternoon for 2-3 days a week you will have lab. When biochem and physio come up you have class from 9-12 and then most of the afternoons are free but maybe once a week there is a class for a few hours in the afternoon.
Almost everyone uses the scribe service (NOTE TO EVERONE OUT THERE BUY AND USE THE SCRIBE SERVICE NO MATTER WHAT SCHOOL YOU GO TO IT WILL BE A LIFE SAVER) so I think I made my point about the scribe service. When it comes to going to class it depends on the class because it can be anywhere from 40-90% of the class that goes to lecture.

Thanks for all your help med student...you clarified a lot of questions I had... and it's great to see that someone acually has excellent thing sto say about their school (very encouraging!!!)
I am interviewing there on 4/29 and just wondering if I am interviewing for a spot on the waitlist or if they are still making outright acceptances
Thanks Again..YOU ROCK

I have no idea.

Thanks anyway med student 🙂 🙂 🙂

I just got my letter teling me that I am on the waitlist for NYMC. Does anyone know how many got off the waitlist in the past???

Past posts on this site have mentioned that only 2 were taken off the wait list last year. However, the number was significantly higher in past years.
Good luck!

Good luck!•••••When you say past posts said 2 people came of the waitlist I wonder if you mean last year 2 members of SDN said they came of the waitlist. If this is the case then I think that is possible. If you mean that 2 people came of the waitlist for the entire school then I would find that very hard to believe because the school has such a large class. Also NYMC is a mid level school that is used by some candidates as a back up school so as some applicants get into top 20 schools they decline their acceptances which then pulls people off the waitlist. Both of these reasons lead to a large number of people coming off the waitlist or at least that is what I think is the case.

I know by speaking to someone in the school's admin (not admissions) that only a few people came off the waitlist last year, and I think those two or so were special cases. I was one of those on the waitlist, and it wasn't fun especially the closer it got to orientation. Everybody on the message boards were wondering what the hell was going on. I called admissions several times, spoke to different people, and they all said that there was absolutely NO movement on the waitlist. Right up until orientation, I heard these exact words: "we have not pulled anyone off the waitlist yet, sorry." When someone supposedly got off the waitlist, everyone thought they were lying. But like I said, I think they might have been special cases.

However, in the previous years, generally out of approx 185 students, more than 40 came off the waitlist. The waitlist is three times that, so I guess 130 or so. They then filter out the bottom third of the waitlist and send out rejections. I think this is at least partly true because I know a waitlistee who received a rejection letter several weeks prior to orientation. That leaves about 80+ students that wait without getting rejections until they fill their class through orientation, of which only half actually get in.

This is all based on hearsay from somebody who heard it from somebody else, so I don't know how accurate it is. Yet no one has given me concrete information to refute it. Take it for what it's worth.

med student, you're a student there, so perhaps you have real numbers to contradict me. Perhaps you know many people from your class (you're still an MS-1 right?) that came off the waitlist. But I haven't heard otherwise. Please confirm for those unfortunate souls (I've been there, I know)!

Unfortionately I don't have any real numbers I was just surprised about what you said but hey maybe last year was a little strange. It is hard to get any real numbers because people generally do not go around saying they got pulled of the waitlist.

I too have been placed on the wait list. Does anyone know if the list is ranked?

medstudent has provided some pretty good info here. read up!
