Questions for a dentist while shadowing?

Okay, so I am shadowing a dentist. I always want to ask him any appropriate questions that relate to dentistry as oppose to the procedure he does.

What kind of questions/topic do you usually talk to your dentist? As in vacation, school, and etc.

I wouldn't lead right in with the heavy hitters, I would start with polite social topics (sports, family, where your from). Then you could say something along the lines "this is a really great experience it is different than I thought it would be because xxxx" and then ask "what is different about dental practice as compared to how you thought it would be before starting?" Hopefully this will help get the dialogue started and you can go from there.

Most dentists I have met are pretty cool people. I second the poster that said to talk with them like you do your buds.

Also, once you have observed procedures and asked your questions about them, I would shift to asking things like:

What would you do differently if you could apply to and chose a dental school again?

What do you think about students coming out with enormous debt? What is it like to pay off such a burden?

What should I pay special attention to in dental school? What would you have done differently to get the most out of your education?



I would try to get as much experiential knowledge from your dentist as you can. They are one of the few people you will talk to before you apply that know what you are about to get yourself into. Just my take on shadowing.

My dentist mostly talks at me, which is fine. He wants to be sure I understand exactly why Czar Obama is ruining literally every thing about this country. I'm okay with that even though I sorta sit in the middle (like most Americans). What surprises me is that he continues the ideologically driven rants into his appointments, haha! So "we" talk politics 80% of the time and I ask questions about dentistry and office management the rest of the time.

I would ask them genuine questions you have. Remember though, some questions aren't always appropriate to ask infront of patients and employees especially those sensitive to money.

also... use discretion when talking/asking the dentist while hes workings.... things to avoid in front of the patient are:

-"omg, is there supposed to be so much blood?"
-"ouch that looks painful"
-"eww, what is that"
-"whoa, that needle is long"

actually, its probably best to hold off all ur questions until the patient leaves.
