I just got accepted to Meharry  and Start in June :hardy: . I'm from out of state and need some info .

Is a car needed in Nashville ?
What living arrangements are recommended for a first year med student?

Any other good advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

I didnt go to meharry but i lived in nashville for 9 years including undergrad. Nashville is a fun young city with a small town feel to it. I really enjoyed nashville.

A car is absolutely needed as it is in most cities.

Well, I'm at Vanderbilt for Undergrad, but I can tell you that you will need a car.

Another Vandy undergrad here. A car is definitely needed for Meharry Students. I have 2 friends at MMC, and I hear they split rotations between the VA (at VUMC) and Metro General, which is too far to trek on foot (not that you would want to be on DB Todd in the wee hours) and MTA (the bus system) stinks. Not to mention there is always some VU-MMC alliance function going on, so a car would come in handy.

As far as living arrangements, my neighbor two years ago was a MMC first year. Our townhomes are pretty new and conviently located to both. PM if you want more info. I think MMC students tend to live closer to Meharry, though.

Congrats on the acception and enjoy Nashvegas!

hey there MrD! Congrats!!! I will be starting at Meharry in June too. I have a friend there who is finishing up his first year...and he reccomends having a car. I dont have one so Ill have to make do lol until I get one. There are some housing options owned by the college...just call the housing office but most people have told me to live off-campus and rent isnt that expensive...compared to DC anyway.

Whats with this Nashvegas and Cashville stuff? 🙂

I lived in Nashville for a brief period of time and discovered that life was a living hell without a car. Also, Meharry has on campus housing for med students. Have you considered this?

I'm an MSIV at Meharry and I call tell you with high certainty that you will need a car. I have known people who didn't have a car during their basic science years and it was very difficult for them. They had to live in the on campus housing (Royal Towers) and rely on classmates for shopping etc... There is no way you can do your clinical years without a car, we rotate at the VA in Murfreesboro (35 mins away which sucks), metro general (on the campus), Vandy (for peds, and surg 5 mins away, and Blanchfield Hospital (campbell army base). Hope this help and good luck.

fernj1975,

Did you live in campus housing? Or do you know any people who did live in any of the Meharry Properties? Please share any insight, experiences.
thanks.

Yes, I lived on the campus housing. It's convenient during your basic science years. Most people who live in the towers eventually move during the clinical years.

What is the name/general location of your townhome? Where can I find more info about them. Thanks.

How are classes structured in terms of notes... is there a note taking service, are the notes handed out at the beginning of the course as a syllabus, is it blackboard based??

I'm trying to decide what kind of laptop to get... if everything is more syllabus based, I think I'll forego the tablet... but if it's powerpoint/blackboard based, the tablet might be a better way to go....

Thanks!

Hey! I will begin med school at Meharry next month also 🙂 I am considering Royal Towers. What can you tell me about it?

Well Royal Towers, formerly called Meharry Towers, is a good choice if you want to live near the campus. I decided to do just that and it worked great during my first two year (especially for gross anatomy.) They have one and two bedroom apartments which range in sizes depending on where on the floor they are located. Most of the apartments I've seen have been remodeled and are in good shaped. The rent is ok but it's not cheap, you can get a better apartment in a good area for the same price but you won't have the convenience of living on campus. Most of the medical students who lived there move out after the basic science years. The maintenance crew is ok, they have been known to take their time but for most of the part they are reasonably timely if you put in your work order. There are 2 washing and drying machines per floor; I never really have any problem cleaning my clothes. It cost $1.25 per wash and $0.75 per dry so it's pretty cheap. If you decide to live there, get a higher floor they have a nicer view. Congrats on your acceptance and good luck.

I know that this is not a dental thread, but I too will be moving to TN next month to attend MEHARRY- I am so excited that I am squirming in my seat. I have already bought a house out there, and for those who are looking I can provide a name of a very good agent. Currently I am in TX, and am a little too old for an apartment, so this was a good choice. But I really just wanted to say congrats, and I hope that I get a chance to meet most of you. 😀

Congrats to all the future MD's!! I was recently accepted to Meharry as a transfer 3rd year student. I think it is a wonderful institution and the staff is very supportive. Are there any third years on this site. Being that I am a neophite, and will be relocating from Florida in mid-July, I just want to meet some third years that can show me around a bit before I officially start in August. Thanx!

Hey there. Congratulations- I know the feeling of excitement! I am also looking into buying a home. I am selling mine in Florida and hope to buy in Antioch. I'm looking at some preconstruction in the area. Private message me about the agent, etc.... Thanx

I'm attending meharry in june. does anyone know if meharry has a note taking service?

Meharry does not have a note-taking service, since they highly encourage attendance in classes (for some reason, they feel that if there's a note-taking service, that would breed absenteeism). You get your course notes towards the beginning the semester, with the powerpoints already printed if you'd like, or downloadable off of blackboard.

And as for those quotes... that's real special. Can't say I've heard any of them.
