Can someone help me out with my questions?

Are there research opportunities for the summer before your first year?
Is it competitive to get the Medical Scholars thing where you get to do a year of research?
Is there funding available to pay for the MPH program if you decide to do it?
Is the financial aid as bad as it is rumored to be (very little grant money-almost all loans no matter how poor you are)?

Are there no Vanderbilt students on SDN?

Hey Saluki--

I'm not a vandy med student, but i can answer at least one of your questions (i went to vu for undergrad and several of my friends are going there next year)... i think vandy gives out a good # of full-ride merit scholarships each your (~20), so maybe there's some hope there.

good luck !

I didn't get one of the merit scholarships; I'm talking about need based aid...

Oh... hmmm.

Saluki,

Research before the first year: I don't know of any formal program. If you contact the program, I'm sure that if you would like to get started on something or with someone specific they will accomodate.

Med Scholars: Most (if not all) people with a reasonable proposal get some funding. Also, while it is not encouraged, I ahve known med scholars moeny to go towards Vandy and otehr MPH programs. Some of the Med Scholars money may be shunted towards extending Emphasis Program work. For more info on Emphasis, check the web or ask the program.

Financial Aid: While I have been fortunate in that I have not had extensive dealings with the financial aid office, my impression is that most scholarships are all or nothing. Sadly, I don't think there is much need based aid. There is a big push and money for "minority students." Also, if you're seriously considering Vandy and you have good aid offers at other institutions, I've heard rumors that it doesn't hurt to tell them about it, especially if it's the only reason you're considering another program.

Hope this helps. Vandy's been going through a lot of changes in my time here. Some I like, some I don't. Overall, it's a wonderful school and I haven't heard or read about a place I'd rather have attended.

I am on the same boat... I really want to go to Vandy... though financial aid is my biggest problem. My impression during my interview visit was there are alot of rich kids there. How did you find out that you didn't get the merit based scholarship though? If they don't give me any money, just all loans I would have to say goodbye to Vandy.

I didn't exactly find out, but other SDNers said that if you're going to get one, they usually tell you when you're accepted...
