Hello. I am a molecular biology student who plans on applying for medical school.

While I am quite sure this is my 'calling' in life, I hope to further educate myself on the details and hope that some of you may be willing to help. I appreciate your time, as I know we all are busy.

I have a list of questions that may apply to current students/residents/and physicians that I'd like to ask. Feel free to answer them all or pick and choose as you feel so inclined.

If you feel uncomfortable in posting, please email me at [email protected] .

Thank you in advance to all who reply. I appreciate your taking the time to respond, your insights, and your wisdom that you have gained along your journey and for sharing that with me.

-What is your typical day like (work day, school day, rotation day)?

-How many hours per week do you put in, including class and continuing medical eduction hours?

-At the end of each day, do you feel fulfilled?

-Was your decision to enter medical school, residency, practice worth it?

-If you were given the choice, would you 'do it all over again?'

-What qualities do/did you like most about your medical school classmates/professors?

-If given the choice, would you have chosen another career instead? Why or why not?

-Generally, how much does a resident make per/year, and is this enough to support a family while attending med school?

And, any suggestions you may have on the mcat, medical school application, admission, and the pre-med, med, post med process are appreciated.

Thanks,

🙂

just to let you know...you're asking to get this thread closed. moderators are lurking and waiting to use their power when people post duplicate threads.

why don't you do what everyone else does and do some of your own damn research.

Get up around 2 or 3pm, unless some jackass calls and wakes me up early. Then I usually take a dump and feed my cat. She's usually taken a nasty dump by this time too, so I clean out her litterbox. I flip around the telly for awhile. If it's nice out, which it usually is, I'll lay out by the pool and go for a dip. At some point I eat something. Usually at night I meet my friends for beers and we watch sports. I come home, watch some telly, and surf the internet. Go to sleep around 3am.

In the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Very much so. I can't sleep when I'm hungry. I've usually had a few beers, and then before bed I'll have something to eat as well.

The question is: wasn't it?

Interestingly enough, I actually was given the choice to 'do it all over again.' This is my fourth go-round.

Patient drivers, careful to all animals, keep in contact with old friends, empowered and informed members of society (pragmatism not idealism), good memories, still cry at good films.

I would like to try my hand at bounty hunting.

Residents make an average of $80,000/year. It is more than enough to support a large family.

It's ignorant jerks like yourself that must hate life. You could do us all a favor and shove it where the sun doesn't shine.

Apart from your ignorance, what the heck do you think research is? Its asking questions genius. FYI, my research is complete, I want to hear from professionals, except you. If you are a MD, Med Student, or resident, then I feel sorry for everyone associated with you, in any way, friends, family, peers, animals, air.

Aside from the ignorance of this poster, I do apprecite legitamate responses by non-complainers who obviously don't understand the true meaning of the word research.

PS: Inappropriate language edited by Neuronix (Moderator). Let's stop the flaming now too please.

I think what MErc44 may be trying to say is that these questions are involved. Most of them have been answered in detail in these forums and that by doing a bit of searching, you can find most of the answers. Most people are only willing to type out involved, serious answers for specific questions a few times; threads like this come up quite often.

When you have a specific question that has not been answered, then it might be advisable to start a thread with that question.

To answer one question: At this point (getting ready to graduate) the things I value in my medical school classmates are: the ability to get their work done in time to get a beer post work, a sense of humor, a sense of responsibility, someone who places a high value on my time/sleep and doesn't disrupt it if unnecessary. These are the things that will make my life easier when I am an intern. Though I won't vouch that MErc44 has any of those qualities, I will say that his attempt to deflect your list of questions (which does not value the time of the people who do post on this board) does not make him/her an awful human being. Especially not someone worth violating terms of service about.

I appreciate your response. For the moderator, I changed the duplicate post so this one would not be deleted, and I also used little #$@# symbols that I see here and there in these forums, so I guess you're still working on finding those one's huh?

I am aware there are many posts here about my questions. However, I was looking for fresh answers from willing participants. Stagnent answers from 3 years ago can only get one so far.

Regardless. Thanks for the previous posts, and future posts from current, post students who have 2 cents to put in.

I know you have nothing to hide. But using your "real" name on a forum like this has never been a smart decision. I would recomend editing that or watching your language and attitude on your posts. Well who cares 😎

Though I did use a pseudoname, I do use that name for articles so I did delete it.

I appreciate further responses.

I'll answer this question. Medical school is before residency so you make zero money as a medical student. Instead, you pay for 4 years of tuition. This is usually done by loans (or for the lucky ones, scholarships) and you are also allowed to borrow money for living expenses because you cannot work during med school. After you graduate, you do residency and then you begin to make money, but don't forget that you have to pay back your loans so you still have to live modestly.

THis is the biggest load of BS I've ever heard
and $80K is more like for 2 years, not 1 year.
you are ******ed and it's no wonder this is your 4th 'go round'

That's really mean.

Wow! The quality of this thread is really superb!

[Sarcasm=off/]

In all reality Bennyhanna, you have asked an extremely open ended question that will not likely be answered. You do not deserve to be flamed, however, you are asking for random people to write stupid posts in this thread.

One way to answer this question is to do a search on google, amazon or bnb for books that outline a day in the life of a doctor. Another way to get the MD experience is to shadow one, or volunteer at a hospital. The question is really quite big, wherein a book about a hundred pages or so might touch on the tip of the iceberg so to speak. I hope you understand now, why some people might feel hesitant to even start a reply in this thread; most students, residents, and MDs don't have enough time as it is, let alone to start writing a biography.

Again, google and amazon are probably your best bet for books. I personally did the shadowing route to get my glimpse into the field of medicine.

Maybe someone can recommend a good resource book to Benny?
