Hello, I am a ways away from OMFS, and I just had a few questions about the field and future job opportunities. My questions are admittedly naive and uninformed, but that's why I am asking them well in advance of pursuing OMFS.

1. How do most OMFS get jobs out of residency? Connections/networking from dental school/residency? Sending in applications to different hospitals or practices?

2. What percentage of OMS work in both private practice and hospitals? How do those two situations differ from one another?

3. Are there opportunities for advancement in the hospital setting for OMS if you have an MD? What about opportunities in academia? Are those positions usually given to OMS simply because they know somebody?

Thank you. I apologize for the ambiguity of some of my questions. Let me know if you need a more concrete question.

OMFS hopeful here.

1. connections - always. certain residencies opens doors. I know some OMFS who loves to hire grads from certain programs because they know what type of training they went thru. Hospital based usually harder to find because they need to have open spots

2. Majority work in private practice due to less stress, less call. Hospital OMFS deal with bigger and badder surgeries like orthognathic, cancer reconstructions, traumas. Most residents just want to chill after residency, so they go for private practice.

3. MD will help with academia, but not a necessity. Most schools have 50/50 single/dual degree OMFS professors on staff.
