I was thinking about going into the dental field and I had a question, though it may sound stupid. Do dentists administer anesthesia in patients for surgeries? Do they also have to take some of your blood for other procedures? Also, is this for general dentists or those specialized in oral surgery? Do we learn how to do these in dental school?

1. no, you hire a anesthesia specialist (350k$ salary to administer the dose for you). what a boss right?
2. what other procedure? yea they take about 500 cc blood for test in case you die on the chair
3. any dentist can do it, heck even a normal human being can admin anesthesia.
4. nah, you learn how to make money so you can hire other people to do it for you.

Procaine has not been in dentistry for roughly 40 years.

Yes, all dentists administer anesthesia. Procaine (Novocaine) and Lidocaine injections are examples of local anesthesia. They numb a small area of your body, but do not affect consciousness. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas), is another popular form of anesthesia in dentistry. Some dentists also prescribe additional oral sedatives (tranquilizer pills) for odontophobic patients, which, along with nitrous, is labeled "oral conscious sedation."

Some surgical procedures require general anesthesia, i.e. unconsciousness. Oral surgeons in private practice can employ nurse anesthetists to administer general anesthesia intravenously.

Dentists do not draw blood for lab testing, as far as I know. (Maybe oral pathologists do?)

Why do you ask, @lostsoul12 ? Do you have a fear of needles?

I don't really have a fear of needles. I'm just a little uncomfortable with inserting needles in veins for drawing blood, etc. Thanks for the info.

Don't worry- I'm sure most people have a natural inhibition/tendency against needles/blood/gore. Before, I used to feel queasy just watching extractions. Now I'm standing through several of them during shadowing and trying to get a closer look at what's going on. You get habituated.
