What are some appropriate questions to ask a PI during a clinical PhD interview? What about a graduate student? (also with grad students, how personal is it okay to get? I have common sense, but I also want to connect with them outside of a small-talk or research discussions, especially with the ones hosting me)

On a different note...if someone got 3 interviews to schools that are all a good fit, and they have decent (not great) interview skills, what is the likelihood of getting accepted? I know getting the interview is the hardest part, but I still feel that my chances are low. Maybe I am being too hard on myself...

I'd talk to your PI about what it is that they're looking for in a graduate student, and what kinds of things you can expect to be doing in your first year. Maybe ask where they see themselves professionally four or five years down the road, since that will likely have a large effect on where you'll be heading. With grad students, I think it's fine to be friendly and ask open and frank questions. I'd recommend talking to as many different people as you can, and make sure to spend time with everyone in the lab you're applying to work with, because most PIs will take their students opinions into consideration when making decisions.

where their students have landed after graduation, their vision for how you could help in advancing their research, etc.
