Well interviews will be starting soon and asking the right questions to get the most of the interview day and also to seem interested in the particular program is definitely important.

I don't think I've seen a thread here reviewing or compiling some of the more vital questions that should be asked.

So - if residents and medstudents would like to add to a growing list then that would probably prove helpful to anyone that will be interviewing.

Thanks.

Many people ask the same question. You don't need to make up questions just to ask a question.

Why not ask the chairman at the University of ---, "Is the widely circulated report that you got an ophthalmology resident pregnant true?" Seriously, don't ask him that!

Just ask the questions that you want to know the answers (except for questions that would hurt you if asked...like the above question)

Its like buying a used car - what to look for - what makes one program better than another - what makes u choose one over the other - questions like that is the point of this thread.

Question to ask:

-What is the board passing rate in your program?
-Where do most residents go after residency? Practice vs fellowship?
-Do they have a hard time matching to a competitive fellowship? Do they get the appropriate support from the program to get their desired fellowship?
-Opportunities for conducting research, publishing, and presenting papers/posters at national meetings.
-If the program you're interviewing at has fellows, you may ask if the fellowship programs usually take internal candidates from their own residents.

Question NOT to ask:
-Do you allow moonlighting?
-Do I get to go home early on my postcall day?
In general, don't ask any question that might make you sound lazy.

I'll try to post more Qs later.

I had a tough time with this exact thing too when I was going through interviews. #1 rule about interviewing is always be positive and up beat. Your questions should also reflect a positive attitude as well. Just think how to word them so they sound that way.
