what does this "dot" mean that you sometimes see in the middle of a compound, for example

CuSO4 (.)5H2O

is it just like there are 5H2O and only one CuSO4 ? thant's all?, are there any other "special" considerations that you have to account for when seeing a compound written in this form?? i searched it but it doesn't say anything about it in my text

IT BASICALLY means 5 water molecules are surrounding one copper sulphate.
might ask a solubility question ????or something per mole on it

previous quote is correct. the 5 water molecules simply stabilize the CuSO4 because the sulfate groups are really polar. the type of question that would require to know this would be either a solubility (previous post), normality, acid/base, or some sort of net ionic equation question.
