Let's say a mass m1 has an elastic collision with a stationary mass m2. m1 then travels in the direction opposite to m2. I know the equation to use would be m1v1 = m1v1' + m2v2. But is m1v1' supposed to be -m1v1' since momentum is a vector? This is what the texts like EK have been pointing out, but I can't recall coming across a specific problem like this (even though I may have a long while back), which is why I just need quick clarification. Thanks.
