Is it correct that we should always imagine folding the figure AWAY from us as opposed to TOWARDS us? From practicing a lot of CRACK DAT PAT, I found that many of the answer choices will be valid if I fold it TOWARDS us. I am not sure if folding away from us is a rule that is also relevant to questions on the real DAT exam. Any ideas?

Think about it this way, if you fold it towards you, any shape with any type of marking on them would place the markings on the inside and therefore hidden from view in the final shape, which is not what they want.

It is absolutely relevant. A lot of wrong answers are fold-out patterns. Always fold into the page. Pretend the side you don't see is all gray or somesuch. There are no markings on the underside.. Many answer choices will be valid if you fold it towards you, but that's exactly what you need to look out for and avoid.
