Hi Everyone!

I have just been accepted to Quinnipiac's MHS in Medical Laboratory Sciences/Biomedical Sciences.

Though advertised as a springboard to pursue PhDs and Medical Schools, does anyone have any experiences with this program (specifically in the case of matriculating to medical school)? Has anyone even heard of it before?? Has anyone else applied to this/been accepted?

I've been having some serious reservations about this program just because of the lack of information available about it, and am wondering whether it's worth the price tag (and if it will really help me enrich my education/qualifications, and ultimately, my applications to med school). Any and all feedback would be very much appreciated!

The MHS program's website states, "students who successfully complete their studies will be well-positioned to continue their education toward a degree in either medicine or PhD programs or employment in the research/development industry and diagnostic companies." That statement can be true for just about any masters program. Those are a dime a dozen. Will you enter a PhD program if you don't get into medical school? Or look for employment in R&D? If not, don't go to this program.

You want a masters program whose sole purpose is to get their graduates into medical school.

So I am a clinical or medical laboratory scientist. I love what I do and think it's a great field, BUT that program is NOT the route I would recommend for someone wanting to get a PhD in a hard science or for going to medical school. The curriculum is all very relevant, I just don't know how the difficulty would be viewed by med schools.

Can people do it? Sure, but it's not the best way to go about it.

The exception would be if you wanted to try for a PhD with the intention of tracking to a field like clinical chemistry or medical microbiology, which this curriculum would prepare you well for. It's a newer route though, so not sure how receptive PhD programs would be. The post-PhD clinical chemistry and clinical microbiology fellowships would probably see it as an asset.

If you aren't sure it might be worth it to contact the school and ask to be put in touch with someone who completed the program and got into medical school. See what their experience was.

Hi,

I was in the program and I can say it is a great program and the courses provide good medical background. If you want to get certified as a medical laboratory scientist and work in a clinical lab, this program is NOT
the best option because it does not offer certification.

I found it helpful and I learned a large amount of useful information. Definitely, may help with the GPA! If you go on to the AACOM websites and check out which courses apply toward the sGPA, it will state several that the program offers.

Biomedical Science
Embryology
Several Hematology courses
Immunology
Microbio
Pathology
Histology
Pathophysiology
etc. are some of the course they offer that DO count towards the scienceGPA. Hope that helped.

Cheers
