So... I am retaking the DAT because of a 16 in RC. (22 TS) I just took some qvault exams:

BIO: 20, 21, 18, 21, 18, 18, 21, 22, 23, 18
GC: 29, 24, 26, 30, 29, 21, 21, 22, 26, 29
OC: 24, 26, 22, 24, 21, 24, 22, 24, 20, 22
QR: 24, 23, 26
RC: 18, 20, 19, 21, 19
PAT: 20

I have searched the threads and most people are saying the qvault RC is much easier than the real DAT. They are all around 22RC in qvault and 20-22 on the actual DAT.

Should I be worried.... I should be right? I really dont care about my science scores anymore. I just need a 20 RC.

Test Date=July 1. Any advice would be appreciated. Please and thank you.

maybe you should try MCAT's EK Verbal book...I took the MCAT before and the verbal there is very difficult. i believe if you can go through those you will be set for the DAT

also, i am not sure you should be retaking the DAT to begin with if all other scores are good except for RC. (given that you have good gpa etc...etc...)

I had interviews last year but each and every school told me my RC score was a big problem... I have no choice but to retake it. sigh.. lol

ouch..well maybe you should consider different schools? private? like nyu...i dont know

i feel really bad that you have to retake the entire test because of RC...

I was getting pretty low scores (18s and 19s) on my qvault reading tests, mostly because I would run out of time. I don't necessarily think the numbers alone are a bad sign. The most important thing is that you figure out the ONE technique (S&D, read entire passage, read questions first...) that works best for you and just constantly practice it. You will probably find that your practice scores will slowly creep upwards. Best of luck

Thank you for that. It makes me feel a little better.. I am a very slow reader. My strategy has been to read the questions first, write down key words, hit the passage, and answer question. I cant seem to figure out how much in depth I should be reading the passage. Then I always run out of time. I have gone through all of achiever, CDR, godfrey's exams. Now I am onto qvault and just struggling and losing motivation ha..

quick question: Is not my technique what people call search and destroy? or is that something else..

Thanks JP. Search and Destroy is when people read one or several questions and then try to find the answers in the passage. Your technique is close to that, but you're probably spending too much time in reading/taking notes on the questions. Couple that with trying to read the whole passage and you are likely burning through a good chunk of the clock. I tried all the techniques (including yours), but ended up finding that reading the passage in its entirety worked best for me. I'd read the passage, take notes, and then answer the questions. My score wasn't all-time, but it was far better than I was expecting (was averaging around 15 on the later Achiever tests). My notes on the real test ended up being too detailed, and so I ran out of time and had to guess on many of the final passage's questions. Regardless of what anybody else does, find something that works for you and keep practicing. Have you tried some of the other techniques? You may also just be burnt out from studying. I remember feeling that way and my practice scores suffered for it.

Have you tried topscore? If not, I'd take a look at those once you're done with qvault. TS passages most closely resembled the passages I saw on my DAT. The basic content questions were the most similar. I found that CDR's passages were not very representative, but their tone/inference questions and their question wording was very close. Moral of the story: find what works best for you and keep practicing!

I spend the initial 2-3 min going through the questions. no more. I felt like this method is most suitable for me because then I would have a general idea of what to look for (such as key words or important points and concepts) while I was reading, focusing on those sentences. I have been practicing with this particular method for the past three months, so I do not want to change my strategy couple weeks before the exam 🙁 I dont think I have much choice here. I am just planning to go in with confidence and avoid panicking during the exam.

I have yet to do the Topscore exams. Ill save the best for last lol. Thank you🙂
