R.I.P. DeBakey

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you haven't read the NYT article about him from a couple years ago, do yourself a favor and read it right now. I honestly rank him higher than Einstein on my list of influential folks of the past century. RIP, Sir.

I was discussing that very article with my surgery attending in the OR yesterday before his death was announced... I flipped when I saw he had passed. He was an amazing man.

A great loss.

Never met the dude but was priveleged to do cases with his nemesis Denton Cooley during my stay at Texas Heart.

Both are icons.

I can vouch for Dr Cooley's friendly demeanor.

I cannot vouch for what I've heard about Debakey.

Still, a great loss, no matter what his demeanor was.

i always thought it was a rumor that he had a golden coat hook by every cardiac OR that was meant just for him... until one of my buddies confirmed that - i wonder what they will do with those hooks....

higher than EINSTEIN? 😱

CPB vs. general relativity? Someone's been in the hospital for too long...

In so far as coming up with numerous ideas that have had a positive impact on thousands of people every day for the last 60+ years, I think Debakey is the clear-cut winner, IMHO; take it for what it is (and yes, I have been in the hospital too long...)

Just for the record, DeBakey had nothing to do with the development of CPB. It started and evolved in Minnesota by guys like Dennis, Lillehei, and Wangensteen.

All that said, I agree with Fake. A little perspective, please.

DeBakey invented the roller pump while a med student at Tulane. Pretty good for a med student... and went up from there.
