Racism is commonly defined as a belief or doctrine where inherent biological differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, with a corollary that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. Wikipediadotcom

I dont really see this happening on this site. I also dont understand why it is not ok to create a "White male where are you going" thread with out it being shut down when all of the other race oriented threads about where you are going ramain open. They dont have any valuable information posted in them either. What is going on here?

good point. i wasnt saying anything important in the viet/korean threads.

and i think it'll be weird if u made "where are all the germans going?" thread. lol

its a double standard...get used to it. you will probably be labled a racist for starting a thread like this the way that word is thrown around these days.

True, but the fact that it's commonplace doesn't make it okay. I don't see how racism against whites is any more acceptable then racism against minorities...

i thought the person was just joking; at least i laughed when i read that comment and i'm still laughing  lighten up! i think its perfectly ok

I completely agree.. I am not white but it really bothers my when i see these race specific threads.. I hope its not an indication of the sort of self-imposed segregation that will go on when we are in Dental School...

I think whats wonderful about this country (which i was born in) is that all these different cultures meld together collectively forming the American experience..

When we, as Immigrants or 1st(2nd or 3rd, ect.) generation Americans, intentionally surround ourselves with only those of our own "race" or "nationality" we dishonor the spirit in which this country was founded, and even worse, we dis-honor the true intention of our parents.. They came here to be Americans and so that we would be American.. I am not a patriotic person but i wish more of us saw ourselves as Americans rather than, Desi, Korean, Latino, ect..

Perhaps we can find other things to have in common with our future classmates.

you all are overanalyzing ItsGavinC. He didn't do it for any racial reason, and its closing has no racial implications. He just thought the thread was stupid. As do I.

I completely agree that it doesnt make it right even though its commonplace, but the problem is racism against whites is generally not recognized and not usually taken into consideration. The media and society reflects racism against whites as nothing significant and can never happen because "whites are the oppressors not the opressees"

I think that is well said, and I wish people would see themselves more as Americans rather than anything else. But the problem is no matter what you do "birds of a feather flock together," and there is going to be some seperation.

Exactly! I am a Korean and I already knew that people like you would be bothered to see that kind of race specific thread. Even Korean guy like me couldn't just stand and watch those korean people isolating someone here like you and want to make their own society. Why can't they think of how others feel? Isn't it the first thing that Doctors should have in their mind? "Thinking of someone else before you think of yourself".

I am still writing comments in that "KOREAN THREAD" and try to stop them but they still don't know what they are doing wrong.
There is a guy who even told me "Don't come to Korean Meeting if u don't support Koreans!" and think that Korean meeting gives him such a high privilege over other people. is he even thinking that I am a traitor? LOL.

I always think of people who would feel bad from this kind of situation first instead of laughing with people from my own race. That's my way of DDS.

Unfortunately, "melting pot" is not necessarily the term we use to describe America. Many times, it's more of a "racial mosaic". Just take a look at NYC tristate area: Coney Island (mainly Russian), Flatbush (Mainly blacks), Chinatown (mainly chinese), Little Italy (Italians), etc. I only hope that we learn to feel more comfortable with each other and learn to work together to create a better tomorrow for everyone.

Agreed🙂

I would agree with you in that the "Second Generation Heterosexual Jewish Korean Vegan Diabetic Females from Seoul" threads may make us feel excluded, but at the same time I don't necessarily see the harm in letting people of different backgrounds join together (and I would agree that your white thread shouldn't have got shut down in principle).
I also don't think that bigotry, intolerance, or slandering against anyone, even white people, males, or anyone in the majority is ever acceptable or good.
But understand that when you're in the majority, it isn't quite the same. My university doesn't have Western Caucasian studies because many of the established writers, literature, and documents have been about Western Caucasians - and thus we perhaps don't necessarily need it as much as the Australian Aboriginal studies program or the Eastern African studies program.
In the same respect, a lot of people on this forum might assume (unless you have some telltale sign from your profile) that you are white, heterosexual, physically able, and in the majority.
I'm thinking the reason for the creation of the threads, the underlying purpose, is to just get a feel for minorities that are headed into the experience as you, and know that you're not alone. For example, it is a comfort for me to know that there are other homosexual individuals going into dentistry too, as it is my friend from Hawaii who knows of other people going into dentistry.

I dunno, I would say to have just left your *Official White 'Where are you Going' Thread' alone, but that's just me....

just like the person before said, i think the threads that a geared towards a specific type of people aren't meant to be discriminatory but serve to see if there are other like you out there going through the same experience. We have to face it that not everyone comes from the same background/ culture and sometimes it is comforting to find others like you. I don't think ppl are making these threads to spite others. I don't see why others should get upset w/ these threads..if ppl are looking for other like his/herself there's no harm...reading all these threads you always see someone make a joke saying i'm not 'x' but can i join your group? i haven't read a single post that is discriminatory in response but its all in good fun..there's nothing to get bent out of shape at all... i think ppl are two quick to pull out the racism card...both majority and minority...i would like to give ppl the benefit of the doubt before saying they're racist....if this is the case what is the response to groups in colleges geared towards a certain culture?

I think the reason that thread was closed was not because of the fact that it was targeting only White males but that people were simply posting nonsense. If most people were to post something useful and stay on topic, I'm sure the administrators would allow it, as they have done so in the past.

i think the point other are trying to make here is that in all the other Race specific thread nothing useful or on topic is ever said...

maybe those threads should be in the off-topic forum?

This was my exact point, thank you. The other topics are just as useless and off topic. I am not saying that ItscavinC should shut down all of the "x race where are you going" threads, but allow the ones that are just as justified in being there as the others. Move all of them to the off topic dental area.

I would also like to add that I think tennis is stupid.

How much can you bench?

Dang, that's over 300 lbs. You must be really bulked or taking supplements.

I can do 300 lbs too, but with squats--nothing in comparison to bench. Heh.

Bench is my weakest lift. I kill on deadlift and front squat. I do not take suplements.

Bench should be your weakest lift; if it were not, you'd obviously not be a serious weight lifter. How much do YOU weigh is my question?

I am about 210 lbs. I meant weakest lift in terms of pound per pound. My front squat is 385, my competition back squat is 500, and my deadlift is 520. I played soccer, not football. Argentina was my world cup pick this time.

Tennis is stupid because that guy in the thread above me said that the "white men where are you going" thread was stupid. Plus, ping pong is alot funner.

i'm korean. i hate seeing those "if you're gonna be a korean dentist, holla back" threads as with any other ethnic threads. if you're trying to see stats due to race, it's fine, but this whole (certain ethnicity) unite thread to me is bs.

This is an interesting question. Here’s a couple of theories. When you have things like “Korean thread”…”latin thread”…..etc, it’s like having the African American student association, the Chinese student club……etc.
one can look at these gatherings in two ways:

a minority group comes up with a way for them to get together since they are in rather small numbers among the majority. Ex: an African American medical student is only one of three African Americans in the same class, so he becomes a member of the minority medical student association so that he can meet members of upper classes.

Another way to look at it is:

A minority group is not necessarily interested in finding classmates who share commonalities as much as it is interested in coming up with a way to exclude others from their gatherings.

For the Chinese, Korean, African American students, and others, the first theory seems to be the case. i.e it’s about dealing with the inconvenience of not meeting a sufficient number of people who would not make you feel different. Ie. It’s about inclusion

For whites, it becomes a little tricky. A white student association, like a white thread on SDN, sound different from the Hispanic counterpart because theory number 1 does not apply with whites. That leaves theory number 2 by default rightly or wrongly. Ie. For whites it gets perceived as a way to deal with the inconvenience of being with others who are different. i.e it’s about exclusion

Just theories though

Let's be honest here... liberals fault. Not saying anything negative about liberals as a whole, but if not for the PC stuff they put out there every chance they get we probably wouldn't have threads like this starting. I'll stick to that white where are you going thread is still the MAJORITY of applicants and so the "where are you going korean" threads are isolating a MINORITY group. It would be like me, a white girl, in Nigeria going to Nigeria for school and finding a thread some native left saying "where are all the Nigerians going?" It doesn't make sense. That being said yeah, whites unfortunately have to deal with getting less rights these days. Liberal cause 😛

What does being a minority or a majority have to do with the issue? I think that it is great that people want to know where similar people are attending. I just expect the same freedoms as everyone else. Should I have changed it to the " Half Scottish Half Irish where are you going" thread so that I can claim to be part of some minority? It does not make sense. The number of people in a group should not matter in racial issues.

Are you saying that itsgavinc is a liberal?

First off, 'white' is not really a race -- thats just too broad.

there should be a 'where are people with german ancestry going... etc'

<--- German ancestry (100%) --2nd generation born and raised in the USA, going to VCU. There, it's a subsection of the korean, vietnamese threads that these posts are about. Run with it 😛

People with ancestry similar to that are all lumped into the "white" category by society. Like I wrote earlier, we are not allowed to have an identity.

I don't even know my ancestry... My parents have told me that we are English, German, Irish, some Native American, Canadian (who knows where from?)... and others. I consider myself an American. No other "category" fits except Caucasian, which I can't really show pride in, for fear of being branded as a person who excludes others. Let's start an "I don't know what I am" thread (for all those mutts out there like me).

Dont you think that this is definitely NOT the case for Asians in Dental School? Asians are the Majority, so its seems to be more about excluding all others...

After just going through the Korean thread, I am more happier to see this thread.

Racism happens to EVERY group, whether Asian, Black, White, etc. etc.

I guess this topic can go on forever, but basically, the way I see it, the way to get closer to others (no matter what race) is through honesty and sincerity. I think that those two qualities (among others) are enough to break any ethnic barrier.

It's nice to see this sort of thread. I think it's good to see how people feel because I feel that each and every one of is in some sort of microcosm, even though we may strongly deny it.

I know that racism is a touchy subject, and I do feel bad that some people feel uncomfortable by the certain "Where are you going ***(ethnic group)" thread. However, I'm sure that the starters didn't make it for others to feel uncomfortable, just trying to have a head start in seeing where similar people are going and to make friends. It's kinda like "official Temple thread" sorta, except for ethnic groups.

Going through school, we see clicks. BUT! We also see different races mingling. Even though it is hard, let us try not to generalize, because generalization creates a lot of barriers, just as much as racism.

exactly. i dont see what the heck the big deal is of knowing that a person of the same ethnic background is going to the same school. it's like... by default, people are willing to be friends with each other due to skin color. i'd rather want to see "car/computer tech lovers temple 2011" threads or something of the sort because it's more about personal preferences and such. anyway, whatever. i just wanna get into a dental school. hope those of you in limbo are doing well.

I agree with this post. Americans tend to segregate themselves along racial lines in our country.
