Hi,
Im an international medical graduate post my radiation oncology residency looking for fellowships in the same branch in europe/USA. Can anyone give me insights on how to go about applying for them and how to find the opportunities? Thanks a heap.🙂

Hi
Some of the fellowship programs allow IMGs for fellowship. However you should pass USMLE exams 1, 2ck, 2cs and 3.(for some programs) MDACC,MAYO clinic, MSKCC, Harvard, Stanford are some of the institutes which have fellowships. Go through other requirements in their respective websites.

what kind of fellowships are usually offered in rad onc? radiosurgery? brachytherapy?

(I came across many radiosurgery fellowships that were open only to neurosurgeons..thoughts about this? are rad oncs fighting this turf war aggressively?)

There is no turf war for radiosurgery. A neurosurgeon cannot do radiosurgery without a radiation oncologist.

A radiation oncologist does not need to do a fellowship to perform radiosurgery.

This leads me to wonder. Why are these SRS fellowships being offered, who is taking them, and what are the actual benefits of doing one?

Probably neurosurgeons who are looking at academic careers in major srs centers? Maybe some of them don't get enough exposure in residency?

Hmmm...

There at docs at UPMC that are foreign trained neurosurgeons that don't re do their residencies but maybe have done these fellowships. Maybe that's enough for co-billing with a rad onc for SRS cases? Other than that, a neurosurgeon should be able to take the gamma knife course or take enough interest in it to partner with a willing rad onc without further training. A 7 year residency really shouldn't require further training. Especially that one. Even most rad onc fellowships seem superfluous to me (outside peds and brachy), but maybe more education isn't worse.
