Is it common to leave a rad residency?
Who fills these spots?
How can one be sure even with a rotation that one can handle it?

1. It very uncommon, but not unheard of people leaving radiology residency. Most leave it because they thought it was going to be a very cush lifestyle residency, but then realized, oops, that they were mistaken.

2. The spots are filled by the many many people who either didn't match in radiology the first time, or more commonly, by transferees from other specialties. Programs like the second group better. We've had transferees from IM, surgery, urology, a couple of ENTs, peds, and neurology.

3. You can't know what radiology residency is like before doing it. Unfortunately, most have no idea. The reason is that in medical school, a radiology rotation is essentially a "hang out and do nothing" kind of rotation. In your "typical" radiology rotation, med students don't take call, have no responsibility whatsoever, and essentially do nothing. Many (residents and the med studs themselves alike) would be happy if the students don't even show up to the rotation.

Is it possible people leave Rads residency for medical reasons like poor blood in the legs from sitting in a chair all day or SAD from lack of light exposure? What goes on in those dark rooms with door closed at late hours anyway???

Inquiring minds want to know!
