Hey Guys-
So I sucked it up in med school. I'm gettin' by, not a horrible student, but by no means a star at a school with a good reputation but not a great one (US MD School, but not UCSF or anything). I have OK grades (1 honors) and a fair step 1 (215). Just started clinical rotations, thinking about doing research in 4th yr (i'm a third yr right now), but I'm not sure if it's even worth it. I'm planning to study my butt off for Step 2. The only unique thing I got going for me is that I graduated w/ honors in undergrad from one of the best Nuclear Physics programs in the country back in my prime 😉 I dunno if that helps at all.
So, do I have any shot at a decent program? University programs? Community programs? Programs in the middle of nowhere?

Thanks for your input.
Later.

i am sure it doesn't suck to be you, suckstobeme. LOL

1 honor, umm well, i think its probably more important that you honor your clinical grades. i hear that by the time you get your step 2 scores, you're either already accepted or so they generally don't matter so much. that's why people don't usually have massive talks about it.

the 'experts' here can give you more on the specifics.

what did you do in before skewl?

Apply what do you have to lose. If you feel less competetive, apply to more programs. Kill step 2 if you can. If you can't try to do research and publish something. Nuclear physics will help you when you study for the physics boards and understand MR, it won't help you get in, unless you have a PhD.

Try applying to a mix of everything.

You're triaged on board scores and class rank/AOA status. If you don't make the cutoff, the rest doesn't matter. If you get an interview, your credentials may give an advantage. The key is getting interviews. The more the better.
