radonc-compatible transitional year programs?

hi all

are there any particular qualities that make a TY program attractive for someone going specifically into radonc...aside from the obvious overrepresentation of cute derm residents? 😍

could you folks recommend any specific programs, or is this all simply a matter of applying to cushy TYs, crossing your fingers and then surviving internship?

Definitely look into the one in LaCrosse, WI. I interviewed there and that program is sweeeet. They put you up their own housing accross the street from the hospital (and only charge you like $500/month for rent), plus the pay was close to 50k and 6 freaking months of elective. TIGHT!

Also, check out the Spokane, WA programs, very cush.

Any program with lots of electives and short duty hours would do. On the East coast, Einstein in Philly was particularly popular. I did Prelim Medicine at Cabrini, which is now closing though.

That LaCrosse program fills its interviews up extremely fast. A fellow student of mine called 3 hours after being contacted and was told they had no spots left!

Ok so I got an invite from LaCrosse... kind of. They sent an email that says "we are pleased to invite you for an interview, however no more slots are available, so we'll put you on a waiting list and let you know." That seems weird to me. Anyone else had this sort of experience?

yes, i received an email from the Gundersen Lutheran TY stating they would open up more interview spots later on. so, no worries.

St. Luke's in Milwaukee, WI is similar, in my estimation, to the LaCrosse program, but the pay isn't quite as high. They paid 45K last year, they do offer very reasonable rental housing across the street from the hospital, and we got 6 elective months. The program directors go out of their way to make this a lifestyle-friendly year (while on wards, you can leave after noon conference if you're not on call, only admit on your call day, etc.), and are also extremely good to the residents as far as perks go (good book/pda funds, very nice retreat weekend, lots of dinners out, etc.) I would do my internship there again in a heartbeat (plus I think I actually learned how to practice good medicine).
