During the course of Radiation Oncology residency, are you trained/expected to learn radiology similar to the level of a radiologist? Contouring/etc appears to be highly dependent on good radiology skills and so I'm wondering to what extent your training overlaps with that of a radiologist.

thanks

You will learn cancer imaging well and definitely better than your average Medical Oncologist. However, you will not be near the level of a trained diagnostic radiologist.

Can you expand on how imaging is typically taught during a radonc residency? What resources would you recommend for someone to learn imaging at a radonc level?

How about these sources?

There are no formalized didactics in Radiology as far as I know. You can rotate through the Radiology Department as a Rad Onc resident of course and you may find this useful.

Most imaging knowledge you just pick up on the fly from viewing hundreds and thousands of scans from various tumor boards, chart rounds, treatment planning sessions, lectures, and individual didactics with attendings.

Those sources are a nice supplement. One way to improve your imaging is to just go through random patient scans and try to identify structures from an imaging atlas.
