OK, Im trying to figure out if its as easy to add RAM to a laptop as it is to a desktop?

Also, Im not sure I can really figure out what having a DVD-RW would be for me personally as a med student. Could someone please explain what I can do besides copy copious amounts of data onto a DVD (something I rarely have needed to do so far as a ugrad/grad student)

TIA

Ok, you can only buy IBMs online. How do I find out if you can easily add RAM versus having to take it to a certified tech?

Buckster, you can do it yourself. It's not hard at all. You just need a screwdriver and a pair of hands, nothing more. That whole getting a certified-tech install nonsense is just a way for the nerds at Best Buy to take your money. Unless you are not comfortable opening it up, then you could let Best Buy take care of it for you. But dude, you're brown... you must've got some other peeps in your area that could do it for you. SOme one that you trust.

No, its not that im concerned about doing it. Im just concerned that the IBM im looking at might not have the easy access panel underneath....or do all laptops have that?

They should all have it. Don't worry about it. The laptops don't have a fused case. You can unscrew the bottom and install the stuff. The thing with IBM, and other big companies, is that they say that you void your warranty if you open anything up, and they'll put a sticker over any of the access panels... some people may worry about this.

When I get time, I'll see if I can find any other IBM laptop DIY installs.
