In the mist of doing a thousand gen chem probs to prep for an upcoming DAT, I had an ephiphany, or better yet, developed an understanding of how percents actually work. 😛 Basically I was doing those weight percent problems...for instance say you have Find the weight percent N in (NH3)2. N2=28g
(NH3)2=142g. So I did 28/142...and of course you can estimate this easily, but this problem had answers with only 2 grams of a difference, so a more concice method was needed. So I knew 142/2=70 and 1/2 of 70 was 35, so thats 1/4 of 142. So thats 25%. So with 25% of 142 being 35, I did (35-28) and got 7. Then I did 25-7 and the answer was 19.... something percent. Very close. I don't know if this is common knowledge and it prolly is, but for someone whos had up to calc 2 and got good grades in it, I suck at basic algebra. Hope this helps someone as much as it helped me explaining it. 😀
