This is kind of a funny question, but here goes: I was recently reading in the "Getting Into A Residency" book and it was mentioning (in 1993 mind you) that the only color of suits that men should wear to an interview are dark navy and black, either plain or pinstriped. I recently bought a olive green/silver-suit (all one color, but very professional-looking), which I like a lot, and was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this. I can't imagine that they expect you to be that conformist, but I thought that I would check anyway.

Thanks

As long as you are well-groomed and look professional you should be just fine. 👍

Just make sure to wear a conservative shirt (preferably white or blue) and tie and you should be fine.

Thanks for the responses guys. Just getting a little neurotic about this whole process I guess.

Hey, while we're at it, if one were to receive an interview offer much before many programs had even downloaded your application, how long should you wait before replying? I am probably going to call them later this week, but I didn't want to be rude. At the same time, this program probably isn't one of my top 10-12 choices of the 30 programs that I am applying to, hence the debate, and why I would like to wait to see what other interviews I may get first. Any thoughts?

Schedule the interview for later in the season or go early and use it as a warm up. If you cancel give them plenty of notice so that they can reschedule someone else (1 week, at least). Some programs offer interviews on a rolling admission basis and others will invite more than they have slots for, so don't put off scheduling it for too long if you are considering the place.

Ladies, keep in mind that you may be putting on bunny suits to go into the OR. The majority of women I saw at interviews wore skirt suits. A few of them had trouble with the skirt in the suit. I bought a nice pants suit that worked really well. Initially I was worried about it not fitting the interview mold, but if felt appropriate and it was so much easier (especially when I interviewed at a few places where is was below freezing and snowing.)

Thanks for the tips gaslady. I am setting up the interview tomorrow and plan to keep it - that program, from what I've now heard and researched, seems to be a pretty good fit for me. 🙂
