Hello, I've been recently accepted off the waitlist for the DPT program I really wanted to get into. However, medical terminology is required. I took it during my last semester of my undergrad (I just graduated this May), but it was an online course. I frankly messed up, and I didn't pay enough attention to what exact assignments we had to do, and which ones we didn't. Therefore, I completed all the wrong assignments and ended up failing the course. Idiot, I know. I graduated cum laude, and I've been on the Dean's List and Honor Roll at my university more times than not, so it's not like I'm the worst student ever.. I just slipped up at the end.

Anyway, my question is: Is it likely that the program will revoke my acceptance due to not meeting requirements? I received my acceptance email June 2nd, and it says that "any conditions of your acceptance must be completed by June 15th," which would obviously make it impossible to complete a medical terminology class. However, it also said you will be notified via a separate email of any conditions you have outstanding, but I have yet to get such an email a week later... So do you think they will make an exception and allow me to retake it? All other requirements I have met or exceeded, and I am retaking it online this summer, and will have it completed with an A++ before the program starts.

I am calling tomorrow to sort everything out, but I am a nervous wreck until then and would love some experienced advice...

Thanks!

They will most likely rescind the offer unless they extend the deadline.

Always pay extra attention to prerequisite courses.

I'm assuming that you had told them (or put it on PTCAS) that you would be taking the med term class in the spring, so that is what your acceptance is contingent upon. I would DEFINITELY contact them asap...when does the program begin? If it starts in the fall maybe you can arrange to take a med term class over the summer or maybe you can work out a deal that you complete one online when classes start (if you're starting in the summer) one of my classmates last year had to take physics 2 during our first semester of PT school and they allowed that....but I think its a case by case situation.

That's exactly what I did. I am definitely calling them in the morning. The program doesn't begin until mid August so I definitely have time to begin and complete an online course. I really hope they allow me to be an exception like your friend :scared:

Your situation is definitely more hopeful in that it's medical terminology (vs A&P or something heavier). Have you contacted your medical terminology instructor at all? I've been in a similar situation where they were able to give me an incomplete while I did a massive amount of makeup work (similar in that I failed a course but needed it to start another course the next semester.). You won't get a great grade but you might be able to pull out a pass. Also, are there any independent study medical terminology courses out there? If they are independent study, they might be self paced and you can often go nuts and work on it for hours and hours a day and finish in a week or 2. In the end, I would make sure you have a solid plan in mind BEFORE you call....heck, go ahead and even register for a class....that way it won't be an issue if the class is open or not and you will have all the exact dates of completion.

I am hoping the program sees the fact that its just medical terminology the same way as you! I contacted my instructor but there was nothing he could do to help me since I had missed so much work and it was so close to graduation.

I will look into an independent study course! That would be the best case scenario. And I actually just applied tonight to take an online medical terminology class that is being offered and has room left in it for the second summer session that runs from June 29-August 10th, which would be perfect since the program begins on the 17th of August. I plan on calling about the online class in the morning, hopefully getting into the class on such short notice, and then calling my DPT program.

UPDATE: The program considers medical terminology as a "matriculation requirement" and not a prerequisite, so I am safe!!!! :soexcited: I just have to find an online medical terminology course that begins and ends before August 6th...

I've looked at online offerings from my local universities, but it is slim pickings finding what I need. Does anyone know of a national online course site that is credible where the credits will transfer?

The University of Mary has an online medical terminology course (HPS 206). Their website is www.umary.edu. If you are interested, I would call the school and see if you can still register for the course.

Northern Illinois University mighy have one!

Did you check all the community colleges in your area? University of New England offers it....the classes pretty much begin whenever.

UPDATE (again haha): I just received all my matriculation requirements via email today! Luckily so, they have included multiple links to places where I can get a certificate for completion of a medical terminology course (apparently it doesn't even have to be on my transcript). After just looking into the first option, it says I can have it completed in less than 25 days! So stoked. Thanks for all the replies everyone! Everything has turned out just fine in the end 🙂

I will share the links if anyone in a similar situation needs a medical terminology class or would like them! Just post a reply here or message me 🙂
