Howdy guys! I've been a long time lurker here, but figured I might as well post!

I had some questions (in general) about the whole medical school process and I know that everyone here (tends to) know what they're talking about. 😀

I'd really appreciate any input at all!

1) How early do students need to start studying for Step 1? I heard they have a very high pass rate....so I can't imagine it being too similar to the MCAT?

2) When medical students request what they would like to be matched to, do they choose only specialties? Or do they choose the location as well? Is there a limit to the number of requests a student can make (ie, how many potential matches can they request?)

3) Can students only be matched to certain hospitals affiliated with the school?

4) What factors are taken into consideration as qualifiers when being matched? Test scores? Extracurriculars? Letters of rec? I have no idea how this works :X

Thanks guys. I really appreciate the help. 🙂

Ughhh thank you guys so much.

I assume by these questions you are a premed... if not I can't believe you are a medical student and don't know at least some of these answers...

1. Check out the step 1 forums. Most people study for ~6 weeks before the test. I'm starting second year too. Basically, do well in classes, use Uworld Qbank and go through first aid as much as you can you'll pass.

2. You apply for a residency postion within a certain speciality at a certain hospital. You can apply to multiple specialities if you want (although I don't know why you would) but that's generally not recommended. You apply to the residency positions at an institution ... so where you apply = where you can match. I don't know if there is an upper limit on how many places you can apply to. $$$ is the limiting factor.

3. No

4. Do a search there are about a billion threads on this. Usually it's something like Step 1 => Clinical grades > letters of rec > Research in speciality > 1st/2nd year grades/ extracurriculars.
