So, to those of you (like myself) that have turned in their rank list, do you have any regrets? Any temptation to blow 100 bucks and revise your list? Anyone secretly hoping to match at their #2?

I was actually sort of wishing I had made my #4 my #1 for a while after I sent it in, but that has passed. I think I will be equally happy at any of my top 5. Numbers 1-3 are top "name" programs, but my quality of life will leave much to be desired. Numbers 4 and 5 are less famous places (but strong programs), and a resident can live like a king at these places.

GopherBrain:

If you strongly feel that you should make a switch, then do so - without further ado. "Name" programs are great, but happiness is extremely important; after all, you're investing 3-4+ years into this program, it's location, it's reputation, and it's attendings and ancillary staff. As long as you don't severely jeopardize your career goals with a "slightly lesser" program (and only you can decide how you define this), you should make the list to what your heart (and brain) tell you to do.

It's great to know that you're "going for brain." Welcome to the field and enjoy yourself! Best of luck with the match.

this diatribe from above post brings to mind a very famous saying : "It's better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid then to open it and remove all doubt" That post was amateur. I may be wrong about you and your stupidity, but according to Lee Rogers MD "Don't let the fear of being wrong interfere with the joy of being right."

Just to clarify, I am still very happy with my list. Places 1-3 aren't just there because they are big names, I genuinely liked them. I just think it is natural to have some conflicted thoughts after turning in a list that has been on your mind for months.

Hey Gopher,

Totally natural to feel that way... at least, I hope so, because I've had some moments of panic/doubt since sending in my list as well. Not enough to rush in another $100, but enough to keep the whole thing running around in my mind quite a bit 🙂 Anyway, like you, I feel pretty confident that I'd be happy at any of my top 5-6, so in that sense I consider us very fortunate 🙂

Best wishes to everyone! :luck:

Total buyer's remorse.

Goph... I fear I did the same thing... I was a little seduced by the 'name' of the program and the sexiness of the city it was in, whereas my #3 is, in a way, that homely girl that is my true love... but then again, if I'd put my #3 as my #1 woiuld I have felt like I was selling myself short and not 'going for it' for the name program in the name city?

I don't think there's any way to win this one except for it to be over.

😴

heh, yeah i kinda have the opposite feeling, i think the biggest top 10 names i interviewed at(especially according to plays list) i put # 7, 8, and 9,one i didnt rank at all(duke). im sure i ultimately did the right thing, ranking places i felt were right for me further up, and this has always worked out for me and been the scenerio in the past (i.e. undergrad, med school)...but i suppose i wonder about going to a big name and if somehow it wouldve been advantageous..(prolly not if i didnt like it there or think the programs were very good)...i guess its not quite the opposite scenerio since you guys really liked those # and #2 longshots.
