Hi all,

I am complete and awaiting interview invites at PCOM, Midwestern, Touro NY, Touro CA, LECOM, NYIT, and Western. I'm just wondering how you guys would rank them and why you would rank them that way. I've done a fair bit of research myself but I'd like to see how the community ranks them

Thanks everyone!

The same level
And what level is that? I have heard lots of people saying that PCOM and Midwestern are pretty great and that newer ones like Touro NY are less so. I'm just wondering WHY people rank them like they do since there aren't a lot of concrete resources out there.

Im saying it from a general perspective.

The best school is the school that FITS your career plan/educational needs

PCOM/Midwestern/Western>NYiT>Touros>LECOM is my rough estimate

Im curious: are you applying to these schools as a backup to MD? Because you've chosen the most difficult DO schools to get into. A lot of the matriculants at PCOM for example are competitive applicants at MD schools.

Stats-wise don't NYiT matriculants have the highest LizzyM scores? What are PCOM's scores

1) your state school, if you live in a state that has one
2) the school that accepts you and fits what you're looking for curriculum-wise, geographically and financially
3) the school that accepts you and will work with what you're looking for curriculum-wise and/or geographically and/or financially
4) everyone else but LUCOM
5) LUCOM

Availability of clinical rotations and price. Those are my top concerns. I frankly don't give a damn if I "fit" - they're giving me a medical education. I'll just be happy to be there.

Would be cool if they have recorded lectures though.

I am applying as backups to MD. I have also applied to 13 MD schools. Frankly though, I am really interested in what DO has to offer.

3.6 cGPA 3.2 sgpa 511 mcat, decent amount of research and clinical, not a ton of volunteer, lots n lots of leadership.

With those stats, I wouldn't even consider DO as "backup" to MD. Your sGPA is way too low for MD, and your cGPA is just average/borderline.

You also applied to the harder DO schools and considered them as backup, but even their average sGPA is higher than yours. You need at least one of the newer DO schools as a backup (although LECOM is the only school that may be considered a backup.) I applied with better stats to MD last year (3.71cGPA, 3.65sGPA, 31MCAT for AMCAS) and got no II, and only got into the lower tier DO schools so far. I also have lots of EC's and leadership positions with a DO letter. (A couple publications, research at Harvard Medical School, etc) Of your list, I only got II to CCOM and LECOM so far.

Are you also Asian? I know being Asian really puts you at a disadvantage for MD, and also you're from California, which makes all the medical schools there extremely competitive.

Thanks for the encouragement friend... haha. I don't want to make this about stats or my chances, there are other threads for that. Just looking for people's opinions of my school list. I try not to participate in the sdn neuroticism.

It's the medical school process. You have to be realistic and know how to tackle this process the best way so you'll guarantee yourself at least an acceptance. I learned the hard way after I thought I was going to be good enough to go to MD school. I wasted a year because I didn't apply to DO earlier.

I got this same speech from Harvard Extension School. Apply broadly, and apply smart. Don't make the same mistake I did. As for your school list, add more of the newer schools, such as CUSOM, BCOM, ACOM, and MU-COM.

And I'm not trying to discourage you from applying. I'm trying to tell you how to tackle this admissions process to the best of your advantage. An acceptance to a medical school is better than no acceptance at all.

I see that, and I appreciate your input, I do. I'm just saying that I've been through multiple vetting processes for my school list from a couple different people that were really knowledgeable about the process and I feel good about where I am. I want to keep the thread about the list I have. Thank you though.

Now back to your ranking: I would rank PCOM=Midwestern > Touro-CA = NYIT = Western > Touro-NY > LECOM.

Touro-NY has some horrible rotations.

Thanks! And again, thank you for your advice, I do appreciate it.

Ask five people and you going to get six answers.

Rank them once you've been accepted to them. By that time, you will have visited all of their campuses, spoken with their students, and interacted with their faculty.

PCOM and Midwestern are easily the best schools on your list. I am familiar with LECOM of the other schools, and honestly would pick PCOM and Midwestern over LECOM any day.

Fit may have a greater affect on your success as a medical student than you are realizing.... And of those schools LECOM wins for price hands down and PCOM and CCOM are probably about equal for clinical rotations.

I know you don't want to make it about stats so I won't but will caution that with that sGPA you might want to add a couple more DO schools to have a wider range ( PCOM and CCOM are considered "top tier" and are pretty competative, think LizzyM of lower MD). I would suggest the same schools mentioned by @mathnerd88 above.
