I have heard several arguments among people about which health professionals income relative to one another. I am curious on how pre-med students view the income potential of these professionals M.D, D.O, Dental, Vet, PA, PT, Pharmacy, Nursing, podiatry, Optometry? these are the only ones I could think of right now. A ranking of 1-10 would be great ( 1 being highest income , 10 being lowest income potential). I changed this to income mainly due to people not commenting on the competitiveness of the health professional schools.

Before I answer can I ask why you care?

yes, i do believe M.D is most difficult, but i would like a rank 1( most competitive), to 10( least competitive).

Also, please note that perceived difficulty of admission among pre-professional students does not correlate with PMAG units.

note: The PMAG is a unit of measurement that describes the increase in dating value a male experiences when he belongs to a particular profession.

And PMAG stands for...?

haha. thanks, i am well aware of the "PMAG". my parents are physicians, and i speak to many doctors about the various health professions.I am very excited to attend Dental school. Just curious to what pre-meds think about other health professional schools and their admission standards.

PMAG = Peebles Museum and Art Gallery

Right?

PMAG Power Rankings:

1. M.D. - Duh.
2. D.O. - I'm pretty sure 90% of people wouldn't know the difference between M.D. and D.O. Just say, "I'm a doctor" and you're in.
3. Pharmacy
4. Nursing - Male nurses probably get ass.
5. Dental
6. Optometry - Kind of boring...
7. Vet - Animal lovers tend to do either really well or really poorly when it comes to women.
8. PA - You're technically an "assistant" by definition.
9. PT - No. Just no.
10. Podiatry - Fondling feet all day? Probably not a chick magnet.

To the OP:

Have you ever noticed that it really depends on who you ask? Most people want to believe that their field/job is the most difficult/important etc. This is just human nature. My pre-dent friends never fail to remind me that dental school is more competitive. My pre-vet friends do the same. My friends in the nursing program do the same as well. If you ask premeds, many of us want to say medicine is the most difficult. Some of us will pretend to be modest and say vet/dent is more difficult but we all know what we really want to say lol.

Honestly I don't really care because I'm too busy being awesome and happy. lol

Dude, everyone knows that Chiropractors are the only real doctors.

Ouch... Putting podiatry at the bottom. Well you know, most podiatrists I know say they're Foot and Ankle Surgeons when we go out to bars/clubs to talk to girls. For all PRACTICAL purposes, and the PMAG is a practical unit of measurement, this would put the DPMs up with MD's and DO's according to your ranking

i do agree with you. but i myself do believe there must be some people out there that can be objective. i believe M.D is more difficult than dental, and i will mention it to my pre-dent friends( they dont aprec it.haha). i have a nursing friend that understands that also. so i just took a shot in the dark, wanted to see what people thought. i prob wont get the results im curious to find.haha

Two words: Bunions.

Also, most guys I know are willing to blur the truth when talking to girls, especially with regards to their, er...credentials? If you know what I mean.

One thing I'll say about dental admissions is that in Illinois there are A LOT fewer seats in dental school than there are in medical school. Like 200 in the entire state (although Midwestern is opening a dental school or something that will double the number of seats) vs 150 - 300 per med school.

So there's 5 times (or more, too lazy to grab MSAR) as many seats for med students. There may also be 5 times as many applicants.

also need 5x more doctors than dentists, so makes sense

Hmm...

So nobody is going to refute my PMAG Power Rankings? How do I go about getting these published in a scientific journal somewhere?

No way, you're way off with PTs. They learn massage therapy and are certified as personal trainers, mandatory part of the DPT. Muscles+massage=pimpin'.

This will invariably become a "omg md is better than all lol."

OP, I'm sure you're perfectly capable of looking up statistics and determining for yourself what the "most competitive" fields are. Or maybe you aren't. Who knows.

Not sure how to rank the middle ones but my ranking would be like this:

1. MD
10. DO (because they're not real doctors)

 Muahahahahahahahahah

But seriously, this thread is pointless.

What's a DO?

It's the only way to become a doctor if you don't attend a prestigious undergrad (unless of course you're a URM, who get a free pass during med admissions, why do you think that is?).

yea I've seen some horrible URM applicants and they got in top ranked schools.

Etzio told me it was the backdoor way to becoming a doctor...so idk...

Do they get to real doctor?

I've got to disagree. Each field is specialized enough to win over certain people. Pharmacists can do well with junkies. Vets get the militant vegans who melt like butter when you save their cat. Nurses work well with watersport enthusiasts. Dentists are perfect for those with an oral fixation. PTs get those cougars who want in home massage sessions while podiatrists get the Rex Ryans of the world. PAs and optometrists sort of get screwed.

Of all of those, PAs and ODs seem to get off quite nicely....

So where do MDs and DOs fit in there? Or is that their PAs get screwed for them b/c they don't have enough time outside the hospital for their "fans"?
(Gives a whole new meaning to the term Physician ASSISTANT....)

Lol, I always thought that optometrists made more than pharmacists. I guess you learn something new everyday. Also, pharmacists do not get *****.

As far as difficulty to get in, it's probably like MD>Vet>Dental=DO>I don't know the rest

As far as difficulty while in school, I can't say for anything but M.D. and Dental, but DDS>>M.D.

That makes sense. Med students are way more chill than premeds about their prospects for the next step and the whole "neuroticism" doesn't quite permeate the lecture halls as it once did (though significantly fewer students even attend said lectures).

Are you saying dental school is more difficult or better than med school? (this is not meant to sound combative at all, I'm wondering which one you meant by the greater than signs)

Made a little mistake there, I'll fix it for you:

1. Dental
2. M.D.
2. D.O.
4. Podiatry
5. Vet
6. Pharmacy
7. Optometry
8. PA
9. PT
10. Nursing

sounds about right.haha. since noone is commenting on the competitiveness to gain admissions as perceived by pre-med students, i guess the rankings of potential income could be just as fun.
