I have a question about ranked waitlists. If a list is ranked, how much do LOIs help?

The way I think about it is if 40 ppl withdraw from their spot, and I'm number 41, then I won't get in even if I write the letter of intent, right?

Then again, the school doesn't tell what rank you are, so is there some fluidity in a ranked list? (i.e. Can a person who shows strong interest be bumped ahead of someone who has not contacted school post-interview?)

Thanks for your help.

there are a number of schools that actually do tell you your rank...Medical College of Ohio is the first school that pops in my head....

but at these schools you can find out where you are and what the chances are that you will be pulled off from the list. If you are low on the list, i doubt the LOI will do anything...esp after they have already ranked you. the people ahead of you did stay on the waiting list and did not withdraw for a reason. They probably need that school for something as well...whether it be their potential first acceptance, or a school that they feel is a better fit for them etc...

the schools that dont tell you your rank...i feel they have a hardset ranking as well and its not too fluid...they just dont want to let you know where you stand.

i think LOIs help the most for places that have an unranked waitlist...

but then again...though it might not help, it cant hurt at all.
