i'm sure someone will say "just decide for yourself, it's stupid for you to listen to somebody on an internet forum and use that to make your rank list. yadda yadda yadda." it happens every time. 😴

but i remember what it felt like to be in your shoes, so i'll give you my thoughts. i'll do it by tiers, within them, you should rank based on gut feeling and where you want to live.

A: CCF, UAB, Hopkins, Duke
B: Fla, Vandy, Emory, Case
C: the rest

just my humble opinion - somebody will probably vehemently disagree. 🙄

I'd say the top 4 should be : Hopkins, Vandy, Duke, and UAB
😉

it all depends on what u want from the program and where your happy living. location is a huge factor. i would rank uab, uic, emory, vandy. uf is a strong program but they work very long hours and if ur married say good bye to ur spouse for 3 yrs.

Which is why yawners 🙂sleep🙂 like me say these threads are worthless.

At best, give a few reasons for individual choices, but from what I've seen every opinion on this board regarding program eliteness/malignancy/workhorse discussions is contestable and full of misconceptions or outright lies.

Many, many candidates this year would love to have your dilemma.

You really don't know how to rank it? Didn't have any feel to the programs? After my interviews I knew my top 4 and my bottom 4. I knew I am not ranking programs that are Q4 and work 3 weekends in a month. I new I liked the programs that had daily lectures and good board pass rate. I new I liked programs where I could find cheap place to live, have job for my husband and have place where I can enjoy my hobby.

Is the fact you listed Vandy twice meant to be a subliminable message? 🙂

You should be able to parse them by location -- if you don't know what you want from a location maybe we can't help you at all -- and then by, what was your feel, were the residents happy, was the program good at any one thing you might be interested in down the road (pain, peds). Durham is different from Cleveland is different from Chicago is different from Nashville...

Seems to me like Duke and Hopkins are a cut above the rest with UAB, Emory, and Vandy close behind. All seem like very solid places.

Jim -

Nice list.

First, you can go to like 7th on your list and end up at one of the 20+ "top 10" programs. So good training is something you've got nothing to worry about. You'll leave residency with a good-to-great name, with superior training at most of those programs. What matters most to you from there?

Benign hours? I'd say UF, CCF, and Hopkins have the reputation (don't flame me - you've all heard the rumors too) for being longer hours in the hospital, and the Vandy intern year may well have been the most rigorous year that I saw outlined by any of the categorical programs.

Cost of living? You'll likely pay less for an apartment in Durham or Cleveland than you will in Chicago or Atlanta. Ditto that thought for traffic.

Extra cheddar? Seems like the folks at UAB and CCF could really cash in on a few extra hours worked if so desired.

You got a significant other? That might be what this comes down to...where does you better half wanna be?

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks for the input. Maybe vandy twice was subliminal 🙂, but in all honesty it's a difficult choice and it's not that I can't think through it...it's more that any extra help is appreciated. I prefer the south and quite frankly feel I'm going with gut more than program profile so when someone brings up a good point about one over another it gives me more prospective, which is why I thank you for the feedback. Any more pointers would be great and good luck to everyone on match.

Ok. I'll do it.
1. CCF
2. Vandy
3. Duke
4. Hopkins
5. UAB
6. Emory
7. Ohio State
8. Univ of Florida
9. UIC
10. MUSC
11. Case
12. Univ of KY
13. Loyola

Hope that is helpful. It was not a random reshuffling of your list at all.

Here's how I'd rank that list (if I were in your shoes):

1. Hopkins
2. Duke
3. Univ of Florida
4. Emory
5. Vandy
6. MUSC
7. UAB
8. CCF
9. Case
10. Univ of KY
11. Ohio State
12. Loyola
13. UIC

Why and how? Prestige, then training/location. But, that's just me. You have a great list of places to choose from. Good luck!
