I equally like one neuro program that is categorical and another that is advanced. The advanced program definitely has a better academic reputation, while the categorical is a community program. But, I only went on two prelim and two transitional interviews. Should I rank the categorical program (lower reputation/community, but all years included) or the advanced program (great rep, but must find PGY-1 myself)?

Also, how hard it is really for neuro applicants to scramble for prelims/TYs in the midst of all of these derm/optho/rads candidates?

Thanks!

I'm in exactly the same boat as you are and have no clear answers. But I eventually listened to my gut feelings! and ranked the advanced program higher. I don't know what is gonna happen, but I am hopeful and optimistic. It is about taking risks and being ready to pay the price.

You should rank the program that you liked the best.

2 things: 1st, it seemed that your "friend" that you quoted in the previous post is actually you http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=693402

2nd, for all the crap you talked about last year, to previous candidates going through the match, and your are settleing for a community program? Nothing about community programs but it seemed that you were shooting them down last year...what happend?

Thanks for your insight into this discussion. You've really shed light on this issue.

Seriously, open your mind -- med students have friends, especiallly in the same or similar situation as they're in...

Concerning community programs, I've never knocked down neuro residencies for being in community medical centers. You might be surprised how many "university" programs really function as community-like.

How many prelims/TY did you interview at?

if you really like the Univ program. Get the list of IM program from last year that did not fill. and prepare yourself for scramble, in case not matched.

RANK where you wanna go first.

In term of fellowship, I do not think it is gonna be that much diff between these programs. but you learn a lot from old school academic attendings at Univ program that you wont see it in community programs. So, I would go with the Univ. first.

Keep up the good spirit!

I interviewed at 4 independent prelim/TY programs. From independent, I mean these are not prelim/neuro programs, so I can put them on supplementary rank order list of any advanced program.
